Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Sophomore captain Delaszo Smith (Baltimore, Md./Annapolis) recorded his sixth 20-point game of the season Wednesday night in Capital Athletic Conference action. Smith tallied a game-high 22 points as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team dropped a 78-60 decision to the University of Mary Washington.
The loss keeps St. Mary's (9-11, 5-8 CAC) in a four-way tie for the sixth spot in the conference standings while Mary Washington (11-9, 7-6 CAC) moves into a two-way tie for third after completing the season sweep of the Seahawks tonight.
Smith was the only Seahawk to break double digits as he shot 9-of-15 from the field with a pair of triples while adding four rebounds as well. Sophomore captain Marsalis Hurley (Cheltenham, Md./Frederick Douglass) led the team on the glass with nine rebounds and chipped in six points along with two blocks.
It was back-and-forth in the first five minutes of the game and Hurley's layup at 15:01 would mark St. Mary's final lead of the game as the home team went up 11-10. The Eagles took over from this point on as junior guard TJ Jones (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) sparked a 21-6 run for a 14-point advantage at 9:23.
The Seahawks strengthened their defensive stance and forced nine defensive stops, holding UMW to only four points in an eight-minute span and closing the gap to 35-32 with 1:18 remaining in the half. However, back-to-back triples from junior guard Matt Forrest (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) sent the Eagles into the locker room with a 41-32 halftime advantage.
Smith and junior forward John Lutkenhaus (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) led all scorers at intermission with 13 points apiece. As a team, St. Mary's shot 46.2-percent from the floor and edged Mary Washington, 17-14, on the boards as first-year forward James Foley (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) grabbed five rebounds.
The Seahawks came within six twice in the second half but five points from first-year guard Mark Madison (Chesapeake, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) put UMW ahead by double digits for the final 9:42 of the game. As a team, St. Mary's shooting went cold in the final 20 minutes, dropping to 31.3-percent with only one triple.
Four of the Eagle starters scored in double figures as Jones and Madison both tallied 16 points while Lutkenhaus finished with a double-double on 15 points and a game-best 10 rebounds.
The Seahawks will be on the road for their next two games, starting this Saturday, February 6th at Frostburg State University (6-14, 4-9 CAC) for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off before traveling to York College of Pennsylvania (9-11, 5-8 CAC) on Wednesday, February 10th.
