Box Score Salisbury, Md. – It was a tough day in the office for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks (1-4, 0-1 CAC) opened up Capital Athletic Conference action this afternoon, falling 24-7 to No. 2 Salisbury University (7-0, 1-0 CAC).
Senior captain Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville) paced St. Mary's in its third straight loss with two goals and an assist while senior midfielder Nick Wilkinson (Huntingtown, Md./Calverton) and sophomore attackman Steve Jones (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) each contributed two goals to the Seahawk offense.
Salisbury opened up with a 3-0 lead at 9:41 before Wilkinson found the back of the net with an unassisted goal at 8:54 for his second tally of the season. The Sea Gulls then added three more for a 6-1 advantage at 2:54. Jordan picked up his second man-up goal of the season at 1:31 off an assist from junior captain Brendan Steele (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) for a 6-2 deficit after one quarter.
The Sea Gulls rattled off six straight to stretch their lead to 12-2 at 5:29 of the second period. Jordan struck again for his second of the day at 1:12, this time off an assist from senior defenseman Phil Cappello (Woburn, Mass./Austin Prep), for a 12-3 Salisbury lead at halftime.
Junior attackman Brady Dashiell (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) exploded for five goals and an assist in helping Salisbury remain undefeated on the season while fellow classmate Nathan Blondino (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) added a game-best seven points on three goals and four assists. In all, 12 different players scored for the Sea Gulls.
Salisbury broke the game wide-open with a 10-goal third period for a 22-4 advantage with one more period left to play. The Seahawks won the fourth quarter, 3-2, as Jones scored twice.
The Sea Gulls outshot St. Mary's, 44-25, and posted a 48-37 advantage in ground balls behind seven ground balls from junior midfielder Duncan Campbell (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge). Salisbury managed to edge the Seahawks at the X, winning 18-of-35 face-offs as Campbell went 12-of-19. Senior midfielders Teddy Secor (California, Md./Calverton) and Caleb Jardeleza (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) combined for 16 face-off wins for the Seahawks with Secor leading the way with nine wins.
Defensively, the Seahawks killed two of four extra-man opportunities and first-year defenseman Benjamin Stevens (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) led the way with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Junior goalie Max Alderman (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) notched nine saves in 45 minutes for St. Mary's while sophomore Joshua Dean (Glen Burnie, Md./Pallotti) made four stops in the first half for the Sea Gulls.
The Seahawks will look to snap their three-game skid on Wednesday, March 16 when they host Illinois Wesleyan College at Seahawk Stadium in non-conference action at 3:00 p.m.
