Box Score Chestertown, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team could not overcome their slow start in falling 10-4 on the road to Washington College in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.
Washington College (1-1) came out firing in the first quarter and built a 5-0 advantage after 15 minutes of action. Sophomore attackman Tyler Powers (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) paced the Shoremen in the period with three goals and an assist while fellow classmate Tanner Barbieri (Wayne, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) dished out two helpers.
The Shoremen tacked on three more in the second before senior midfielder Matt Carney (Alexandria, Va./Potomac) stopped the bleeding with his third tally of the season with 7:16 left in the half. Barbieri picked up his first goal of the game at 1:41 followed by junior midfielder Luke Eshleman (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) scoring with 49 seconds to go for a 9-2 Washington College halftime lead.
Powers finished the afternoon with six points on three goals and three assists while Barbieri ended with his three first-half points (1 G, 2 A). Senior midfielder Sid Looney (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton) chipped in two goals while first-year midfielder Nick Boyles (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) added a goal and an assist.
The two sides traded goals in the third stanza as Looney and Carney each scored for their respective teams. It was the second goal of the day for each player as Washington College carried a 10-3 lead into the fourth quarter.
St. Mary's (1-2) kept the Shoremen off the scoreboard in the fourth while junior captain Brendan Steele (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) assisted on junior midfielder Mike Becraft's (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) second goal of the season at 8:22.
Junior Kyle Gangemi (Elkton, Md./Salesianum [Del.]) posted an 11-of-16 performance in face-offs as the Shoremen won 12-of-17 for the game. Washington College dominated the shots and ground balls, outshooting the Seahawks, 55-25, and posting a 39-23 margin in loose ball pickups. Gangemi scooped up a game-best seven ground balls to lead the Shoremen.
The Seahawk defense kept Washington College scoreless on four extra-man opportunities while junior midfielder Colin Tiffey (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) led the team with three caused turnovers and first-year defenseman Benjamin Stevens (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) notched four ground balls.
Junior goalie Max Alderman (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) registered 15 saves, including six in the first quarter, while sophomore Ben Flood (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett) had 11 stops in Washington College's first win of the season.
St. Mary's has a week to regroup before welcoming Kenyon College to Seahawk Stadium on Wednesday, March 9 for non-conference action at 3:00 p.m.
