Waldorf, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team (5-15) tumbles against Rivier University (3-11), 5-1, at the home of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, the Regency Furniture Stadium.
Senior third baseman Hayden Ferington (Centreville, Va./Westfield) would have a great showing for the Seahawks, racking up two hits, one run, and one RBI. Hitting was definitely his strength against Rivier as Ferington brought in a double and a home run, which highlighted the bottom of the seventh. Ferington would hit hard to leftfield, recording his first home run of the season and putting the Seahawks on the board.
Though Ferington's efforts were strong the Seahawks would not be able to stop Rivier. The Raiders got on the board early in the second inning. They would continue their momentum through the third. Rivier would have a 3-0 lead and go scoreless for four innings as the Seahawks held them defensively.
The Seahawks recorded a double play in the third inning when senior outfielder Taylor Black (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) grounded to the senior shortstop Hunter Mohler (La Plata, Md./Bishop McNamara) who quickly placed the ball to junior second baseman Zach Rowe (Davidsonville, Md./Calvert Hall) and a quick throw to senior first baseman Michael O'Neill (Ocean City, Md./Stephan Decatur) for the first two outs of the inning.
Despite the Seahawks determination and one run on the board, the Raiders would be able to score in the eighth and ninth innings and secured the four-run victory.
The Seahawks would record a total of five hits for the game with one run and two errors. First-year Ben Webster (Bethesda, Md./Bullis School) got his first start of the season, taking the loss after pitching 3.0 innings for the Seahawks.
The Seahawks will return to their home territory at the Hawk's Nest when they compete against nationally-ranked Salisbury University in a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 26.
