St. Mary's Men's Lacrosse Comes up Short at No. 4 York (Pa.)

Box Score

York, Pa. – A slow start in the first quarter denied the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team the opportunity of posting an upset win over No. 4 York College of Pennsylvania Wednesday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action.

In what was the first battle of many to come between the Childs brothers on the field – Jason on the Seahawk sideline and Brandon on the York sideline – younger brother, Brandon, and his Spartans notched a 15-11 win following a 5-0 first quarter.

Senior captain Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville) continued to light up the scoreboard for St. Mary's, finishing the day with game-highs of five goals and six points, while senior captain Austin Toland (Cockeysville, Md./St. Paul's School) was the only other Seahawk with a multiple-point game as Toland tallied two scores.

The Seahawks (3-6, 1-3 CAC) started behind the eight-ball as it was all York (10-1, 3-0 CAC) in the first quarter. The Spartans fired off five unanswered goals, including a hat trick from senior attackman Andrew Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton), for a 5-0 lead after 15 minutes.

St. Mary's finally got off the bus and closed the gap to 5-3 at 10:32 with the first three goals of the second period, capping the run with his first career goal was sophomore defenseman Conner Campbell (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga). The Spartans then ended the half outscoring SMCM, 4-1, including two goals in the final 20 seconds, for a 9-4 halftime advantage.

Gamble was the leading scorer for York, finding the back of the net four times, while first-year midfielder Andrew Glab (Forest Hill, Md./Calvert Hall) chipped in a hat trick and an assist. Sophomore attackman Dillon Hannah (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) contributed a goal and two helpers as the Spartans won their third straight.

Once again, the scoring was equal as both sides picked up four goals in the third stanza. York netted the first two goals for its biggest lead of the game, 11-4, at 11:48. A 4-0 run by the Seahawks pulled them within three at 3:22 as Jordan had two goals and a helper in the run. YCP would head into the fourth with a five-goal lead. St. Mary's edged the Spartans, 3-2, in the final 15 minutes with Jordan scoring twice.

York posted 16-of-29 face-off wins despite a career-best 10-of-14 effort by Seahawk senior midfielder Caleb Jardeleza (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro). The Spartans also edged St. Mary's in ground balls, 40-35, as sophomore defenseman Joey Fiorino (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) and first-year Billy Sasso (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Twp.) each grabbed a game-best seven ground balls.

On the defensive end, junior defenseman Mike Freiji (Westminster, Md./Loyola Blakefield) collected four caused turnovers and three ground balls while junior goalie Max Alderman (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) picked up 15 saves and a career-best six ground balls. Senior Caleb Abney (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) had 12 stops in 59 minutes for York as Abney improved to 9-0 on the season.

The Seahawks will enjoy a week of rest before returning to Seahawk Stadium to take on the University of Mary Washington in a key CAC matchup at 4:00 p.m.
