Box Score Frostburg, Md. – The first season under first-year head coach Jason Childs came to an end Saturday afternoon as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team dropped an 18-9 decision to Frostburg State University in Capital Athletic Conference action.
The Seahawks posted a 4-9 (2-6 CAC) overall record for the 2016 campaign in Childs' first year at the helm as St. Mary's battled the injury bug all season long. With today's win, Frostburg State (14-3, 5-3 CAC) locked up the No. 4 seed in the 2016 CAC Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament and will host No. 5 seed University of Mary Washington in first-round action on Tuesday, April 19.
Senior attackman Nick Wilkinson (Huntingtown, Md./Calverton) paced the Seahawks with three goals to finish as the team's second-leading scorer with 28 points on 16 goals and 12 assists while first-year Ray LaPlaca (Owings, Md./Calverton) also contributed three points on two goals and one assist. Senior captain Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville) tallied two goals in wrapping up his career-best campaign as the team's leading scorer with 57 points on 37 goals and 20 assists.
FSU went up 2-0 before Wilkinson notched his first of the day at 8:48 to put St. Mary's on the board. Sophomore midfielder Ethan Aikin (Lothian, Md./Southern) scored one for the Bobcats for a 3-1 lead at the end of one. It was all Frostburg in the second quarter as the hosts outscored the Seahawks, 7-2, including three in the final 45 seconds of the half.
Senior attackman Spenser Lover (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) led the Bobcats in their second straight win with a game-high seven points on two goals and five assists while senior midfielder Tate Rolland (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) scored four and sophomore attackman Nick Pontorno (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) chipped in three goals and a helper.
The Bobcats followed up the second period with another strong offensive performance in the third, using a 7-1 run to establish a 17-4 advantage with 15 minutes left in the game. FSU tallied the first goal of the fourth but St. Mary's took over after that, rattling off five unanswered goals behind five different scorers.
Frostburg outshot the Seahawks, 55-41, and registered a 41-21 advantage in ground balls as senior midfielder Erik Geiser (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) scooped up 12 in winning 15-of-17 face-offs. The Bobcats finished the game with a 21-of-30 performance at the X.
In his final game as a Seahawk, senior defender Phil Cappello (Woburn, Mass./Austin Prep) caused a game-best four caused turnovers while junior midfielder Mike Becraft (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) paced the team with five ground balls and added two caused turnovers.
Junior goalkeeper Max Alderman (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) finished the game with seven saves in 55 minutes while senior Tom Kraemer (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) helped FSU to the win with seven stops in three quarters of action.
