• The Short Story: The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team had a less than favorable start to the 2017-18 campaign Wednesday night. The start of the C.K. Calhoun era was marked by a 60-41 setback to The Catholic University of America in non-conference action.

What It Means

• This is Catholic's eighth consecutive win over the Seahawks. St. Mary's last win over the Cardinals – a 43-39 triumph on January 25, 2007 – was during CUA's final season as a member of the Capital Athletic Conference.

How It Happened

• Catholic flew out to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter before senior captain Olivia Nowlin (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) put the Seahawks on the board. A pair of free throws by first-year guard Kyaira Priest (Lexington Park, Md./Chopticon) closed the gap to 21-13 at the end of one quarter.
• Only 17 points were scored in the second frame but it was enough to send the Cardinals into the locker room with a 33-18 advantage.
• Briana Bull led all scorers with 17 points and four steals at halftime while Priest paced the Seahawks with six points off the bench.
• The Cardinals earned their biggest lead of the game during the third period as nine straight points resulted in a 28-point margin.
• St. Mary's outscored CUA, 12-4, in the fourth, including eight straight points sparked by a triple  by senior guard Christine Morin (Kensington, Md./St. John's [D.C.]).

Inside the Box Score

• Junior forward Kobe Chaney (Edgewater, Md./South River) grabbed 14 rebounds, four blocks, and three points while Priest finished with nine points, two boards, and two assists in her collegiate debut.
• Nowlin hauled in a career-best nine boards and added seven points plus two steals while senior captain Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James) tallied seven points, five caroms, and a career-best two blocks.
• Bull ended up with her 17 first-half points to lead all scorers on the night while Sydney Poindexter hauled in a team-best nine rebounds.
