Seahawk Women's Tennis Opens up Spring Season on Road at Randolph-Macon

Ashland, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team opened up the spring portion of the 2016-17 season with an 8-1 road loss to the regionally-ranked Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College on Sunday morning. Randolph-Macon is ranked 17th in the Atlantic South region.

Doubles

  • Team captains Marissa Romanek (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) and Melissa Barall (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) started the day with a hard-fought loss to the Yellow Jackets at No. 1 doubles. They would go into a tiebreaker with Randolph-Macon's Caitlin Delmas and Toni McDonald but dropped a 9-8 (7-5) decision.
  • The team of first-year Claire Bodine (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) and junior Raziela Manangan (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) fell, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles.
  • Juniors Savannah Bergen (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) and Chelsea English (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) opened up their spring by winning two games, but ultimately, coming up short at No. 3 doubles.

Singles

  • Barall closed out the day for the Seahawks by winning her No. 1 singles match against Delmas. She would be victorious in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.
