LaPlaca Score Twice as St. Mary's Men's Lacrosse Falls to No. 5 York (Pa.)

St. Mary's City, Md. – Sophomore midfielder Ray LaPlaca (Owings, Md./Calverton) tallied two goals Wednesday afternoon as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team took on No. 5 York College of Pennsylvania in the 2nd Battle of the Childs. Sixth-year head Brandon Childs and his Spartans claimed a 13-4 Capital Athletic Conference win over his older brother's, Jason Childs, St. Mary's squad.

How It Happened

  • York came out firing and staked a 5-0 lead after the first quarter of play behind an early hat trick by sophomore midfielder Austin Glab (Forest Hill, Md./Calvert Hall).
  • The Seahawks slowed down YCP in the second period, limiting the Spartans to just one goal. LaPlaca finally put St. Mary's on the board off an assist from junior attackman Dan Long (Mechanicsville, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) with a 1:03 left in the first half.
  • The Spartans outscored St. Mary's, 4-1, in the third stanza to extend their advantage to 10-2 as sophomore attackman Hunter Davis (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) chipped in two goals and an assist.
  • LaPlaca and senior captain Mike Becraft (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) both notched goals in the final quarter to make it a 13-4 final.

For St. Mary's (1-9, 1-2 CAC)

  • Junior defenseman Conner Campbell (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) paced the defensive effort with game-bests of four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Sophomore midfielder Michael Bucci (Davidsonville, Md./Severn) won 10-of-16 face-offs with three ground balls and St. Mary's finished the game with an 11-of-20 edge at the X.
  • Senior captain Max Alderman (Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) registered 14 stops, including nine in the first half.
  • St. Mary's committed 24 turnovers and went 0-for-2 in extra-man opportunities.

For No. 5 York (11-1, 3-0 CAC)
