St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team (5-6, 1-2 CAC) split a pair of Capital Athletic Conference matches on Saturday. St. Mary's dropped a 9-0 decision to regionally-ranked Salisbury University (5-5, 1-1 CAC) before posting an 8-1 victory over Frostburg State University (5-6, 0-1 CAC).
Prior to the start of the Frostburg match, the Seahawks would also honor seniors Sara Eaton (Owings Mills Md./Oregon Episcopal [Ore.]) and Marissa Romanek (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown).
St. Mary's 0, Salisbury 9
Doubles
- St. Mary's put up a fight in doubles action, winning a combined five games in three matches. Junior captain Melissa Barall (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) and Romanek took three games from Salisbury's top duo of Annika Kezman and Julia Kwedi, who are ranked ninth in the Atlantic South region.
Singles
- Barall battled Kezman, who ranks 25th in the region, at No. 1 singles and took Kezman to the brink, falling 3-6, 6-7 (4) in a hard-fought match.
- Junior Raziela Manangan (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) captured five games in her No. 4 matchup with Jordan Schaefer, coming up short in a 2-6, 3-6 loss.
- Junior captain Chelsea English (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) also won five games at No. 5 singles, suffering a 0-6, 5-7 setback at the hands of Sage Cole.
St. Mary's 8, Frostburg State 1
Doubles
- The Seahawks dominated the doubles round and all three tandems won their doubles matches with the same score of 8-2.
Singles
- Barall, Romanek, Manangan, and English all won their singles matches in straight sets, adding four more points to the Seahawks' score.
- Junior Savannah Bergen (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) would come on at No. 6 singles and pick up an exciting 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 win over Sammi Turner.
