St. Mary's Women's Tennis End Season in Playoffs

York, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team (7-9) saw their season come to a close Saturday in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament. The fifth-seeded Seahawks dropped a 6-3 decision to the fourth-seeded Spartans of York College of Pennsylvania.

In the regular-season matchup between the two sides, York topped St. Mary's, 7-2, on April 9 as the Seahawks claimed no doubles wins. This time around, St. Mary's picked up a win at No. 3 doubles and won again at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.

St. Mary's 3, York 6

Doubles

  • Junior Savannah Bergen (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) and first-year Claire Bodine (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) gave the Seahawks an early 1-0 lead as the duo defeated Maisie Supp and Carter Vaughn, 8-6, at No. 3 doubles, giving them a team-leading six doubles wins.
  • York's Katie Wagner and Darian Naill evened up the match by taking down team captains Melissa Barall (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) and Marissa Romanek (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown), 8-6, at No. 1 doubles.
  • Juniors Raziela Manangan (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) and Chelsea English (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) would also have a tight match with Rachel Wagner and Mckenzie Krout but would lose 9-7, sending the Spartans into singles action with a 2-1 advantage.

Singles

  • York claimed four straight singles wins at No. 5, No. 2, No. 6, and No. 1. The match was decided by Gina Liguori's 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles as the Spartans gained a 5-1 lead and then stretched it to 6-1 with the triumph at top singles.
  • Bodine would end her first year with the Seahawks by defeating Krout, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
  • Manangan would be the other Seahawk to pull in a win on the day by handing Naill a 6-3, 7-6 (3) setback.
  • Bodine and Manangan both finished up the 2016-17 season with a team-best nine singles victories.

This concludes the season for the Seahawks, finishing the year with a 7-9 overall record and going 3-4 in conference play.
