- The Short Story: The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team posted their third straight win Wednesday night as four starters finished with double-digit scoring. St. Mary's secured its first Capital Athletic Conference win of the season with a 66-59 victory over Southern Virginia University. The Seahawks' current three-game win streak is the longest since the program won three in a row during the 2014-15 campaign.
How It Happened
- St. Mary's and the Knights were neck-in-neck throughout the first half with neither side establishing a lead greater than four and the game being tied seven times.
- The two sides were even at 20-20 after the first quarter and then the Seahawks staked a 40-38 halftime advantage behind junior forward Kobe Chaney's (Edgewater, Md./South River) bucket at 1:02 while SVU went 0-for-3 with a turnover in the final minute.
- Shelby Butler (13 pts) and Katie Garrish combined for 25 of Southern Virginia's 38 first-half points while Chaney led St. Mary's at the break with eight points and seven rebounds.
- The third quarter belonged to the Seahawks as the hosts put some distance behind them with an 8-0 run to start the second half and claim their biggest lead of the game (10) at 3:37.
- SVU fought back to within two three times within the first six minutes of the fourth period before senior captains Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James) and Olivia Nowlin (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) pushed the margin back up to seven with 2:24 left and St. Mary's held on for the seven-point lead.
Inside the Box Score
- St. Mary's hit a season-best 13 steals as junior captain Katie Robey (Kensington, Md./Georgetown Visitation) collected a game-best five steals, matching her season-high for the second consecutive game.
- The Seahawks took care of the ball tonight, committing only 14 turnovers – their lowest total of the season so far.
- Kline paced the team offensively with 17 points and added four rebounds, two assists and two steals while Nowlin was next with 11 points, eight boards, a season-best four steals, and three helpers.
- Chaney finished the evening with her fourth double-double of the season on 11 caroms and 10 points plus two assists and two blocks while first-year forward Hallie Persell (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points.
- Butler finished with a game-high 22 points while Garrish recorded a double-double on 12 points and a game-best 16 rebounds as the Knights saw their three-game win streak come to an end.
