Leonardtown, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking 13-11 loss to the University of Mary Washington Saturday afternoon at St. Mary's Ryken High School in Leonardtown, Md. Mary Washington (5-4, 1-0 CAC) scored two goals in just over a minute to secure the Capital Athletic Conference win over the Seahawks (3-6, 0-1 CAC).

How It Happened

• Mary Washington struck first as the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead at 7:22 behind a goal and an assist from Shane McKenzie. Junior midfielder Marshall Rhodes (Potomac, Md./Churchill) put the Seahawks on the scoreboard in the final 47 seconds of the first quarter with an unassisted goal.
• The two teams traded the first five scores of the second period and UMW claimed a 5-3 margin at 6:05. However, St. Mary's rattled off three unanswered goals from juniors Max Groen (New Haven, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) and Ray LaPlaca (Owings, Md./Calverton) and Rhodes to top the Eagles by one at 1:21.
• The Seahawks and Mary Washington headed into halftime tied at 6-6 as Conor Healy tallied an unassisted goal with 26 seconds remaining in the first half.
• St. Mary's opened up the third stanza on a 3-1 run to post a two-goal separation at 4:16 behind a pair of LaPlaca goals. The Eagles closed the gap to one as Healy once again struck in the final seconds of the quarter.
• Owen Dingman fueled a 3-1 UMW run to start the final period and help the Eagles regain an 11-10 lead at 9:42. Then junior defenseman Benjamin Stevens (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) ran coast-to-coast and scored his first career goal for the equalizer at 5:25.
• Mary Washington won the next two face-offs and was able to score on both possessions as Chris White and Healy both found the back of the net. The Seahawks earned the final face-off win at 2:48 but turned the ball over twice.

Inside the Box Score

• LaPlaca finished the afternoon with a career-best four goals, two ground balls and a caused turnover while Rhodes chipped in career-highs of three points, two goals, and an assist.
• On defense, Stevens scooped up a career-best six ground balls and caused two turnovers while senior captain Conner Campbell (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) contributed a season-high five ground balls, a game-best three caused turnovers, and his sixth career goal.
• Junior goalie Ross Snodderly (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) recorded a career-best 17 saves for the second time this season.
• McKenzie paced UMW with three goals and three assists while Eli Ayer went 19-of-24 at face-off X. In goal, Billy Senicola made eight saves with a ground ball and a caused turnover.
