Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Saint Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team (6-8, 0-3 CAC) continued their tough CAC schedule by traveling to No. 21 Christopher Newport (12-2, 2-1 CAC) Wednesday (Jan. 9) night. The Seahawks fell to the Captains 79-52.

Trailing 13-3, the Seahawks inched themselves back into the game with a 5-0 run, forcing a Christopher Newport timeout. Spencer Schultz started the run with a layup and Justin Milstead followed with a made three-pointer.

Christopher Newport slowly extended their lead throughout the rest of the first half. However, the Seahawks stayed in the game with another five-point run to end the first half. Zach Spooner found Darick Kerns who connected with a layup, and Schultz finished the run with a layup and made free throw. St. Mary's headed into the locker rooms trailing Christopher Newport 41-27.

Naheed John looked to build momentum for the Seahawks with a made layup to begin the second half. The Captains quickly answered by draining two three pointers and a layup for a swift eight-point swing.

With 7:34 remaining in regulation, St. Mary's strung together nine-straight points to cut the deficit to 69-51. Austin Heller initiated the run by driving to the rim and sinking a tough layup. Heller drew a foul during the play and sunk the ensuing free throw. Spooner followed with an impressive dunk, while Kerns and Rodney Christian drained free throws to cap the run.

Christopher Newport finished the game strong, outscoring St. Mary's 10-1 for the victory.
