CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team (4-1) traveled to Washington College on Wednesday (Mar. 4) afternoon and defeated the Shoremen (0-4) in thrilling fashion. Jeremiah Clemmer pulled off the late-game heroics with the game-winning goal off an extra-man opportunity for the 14-13 victory.

How It Happened

• The first quarter of action was an offensive shootout that featured nine total goals. St. Mary's College recorded back-to-back goals to start the game to grab an early 2-0 advantage. Dominic Venanzi and Abe Hubbard scored for the early lead. Washington College answered with two-straight goals to tie the game, but the Seahawks quickly responded with another two goal run to capture a 4-2 lead. Ben Claffee and Jack Gillogly beat the opposing goalkeeper for scores. Next, the Shoremen finished the opening frame strong with three-straight goals to retake the lead, 5-4.

• Both defenses stepped up in the second quarter and limited the opposing offenses to limited scores. The Seahawks outscored the Shoremen 3-2 and headed into halftime tied 7-7. Erich Wuesthoff, Noah Kellner, and Venanzi recorded goals for the Seahawks in the stanza.

• Washington College took a 9-8 lead approximately five minutes into the second quarter. However, St. Mary's College netted three-straight goals when Gillogly, Wuesthoff, and Jude Brown found the back of the net to put the Seahawks back on top, 11-9. The Shoremen once again closed out a quarter strong with a two goal run to even the game back up at 11-11 to end the third.

• The Shoremen captured the momentum to start the fourth quarter with two-straight goals to take the lead. Trailing by two with 9:50 remaining, the Seahawks knotted the game up again with a man-up goal from Claffee at the 6:01 mark and a score from Abe Hubbard with 2:50 remaining. The clock struck zero in regulation and both squads headed into overtime tied 13-13.

• The first overtime was scoreless, and in the second overtime it seemed the Shoremen won the game when a shot trickled into the back of the Seahawk goal. However, an illegal procedure penalty on the Shoremen wiped the goal away. The Seahawks were awarded an extra-man opportunity and took full advantage when Clemmer got his hands free to fire off a shot that found the back of the cage for the exciting victory.

Inside the Box Score

• Brown led the Seahawks with five points on the offensive end, recording two goals and three assists. Venanzi and Clemmer also had impressive game's with four points each, respectively.

• Cristian Quiroa made an impact on the defensive end with a team-high three caused turnovers. Luke McWright led the Seahawks with a team-best 10 ground balls. In goal, Kyrle Preis collected 11 saves and earned his fourth victory.

• Cooper Sloan led the Shoremen with three goals and one assist.
