Box Score Washington, D.C. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team (3-3-4) traveled to Washington D.C. this evening (Sep. 21) for a midweek non-conference contest against the Cardinals of Catholic University (1-4-2). The Seahawks and Cardinals finished the game in a 2-2 draw.
How it Happened
-
Catholic's Jordan Siok scored the first goal of the game 15 minutes in. Siok was fouled inside the Seahawk box and was awarded a free kick. She was able to make the most of her opportunity to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
-
Neither the Seahawks or Cardinals scored the remainder of the half. Catholic took their one goal lead into the intermission.
-
Just three minutes into the second half, Ella Raines was able to intercept an errant pass near the midfield and start a break away run towards the cardinal box. Raines entered the box and converted on a one-on-one with the goalie sending the ball into the back right corner to tie the game at one a piece.
-
Catholic responded 15 minutes later with a goal off of a cross that gave the Cardinals the lead back with about 20 minutes left on the clock.
-
With just over three minutes left in the game, Megan Stambaugh made a nice play in the Seahawks' defensive zone to gain control of the ball and immediately sent in a pass down field towards the direction of Ella Raines. Raines' timing was immaculate, as she was able to get behind the Catholic defense without going offside, Raines once again found herself in a one-on-one situation with the Catholic goalkeeper inside the Cardinal box and once again delivered with a goal to knot the game back up.
-
Neither team scored in the closing minutes. The game ended 2-2.
-
Head Coach Peter Krech's thoughts on the game, "After a slow start, we were able to play our way back into the game and show our true quality especially in the second half. I was proud of the team for the heart and character they showed tonight, going down twice and coming back twice to take a draw on the road against a good Catholic team."
