VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team began the 2023-24 campaign Saturday afternoon (Oct. 14) with a pair of dominant non-conference wins. St. Mary's College (2-0) earned a 122-73 triumph over Randolph College (3-1) and a 123-63 victory over host Virginia Wesleyan University (0-2).
How It Happened
- The Seahawks placed two relay teams in the Top 3 in the 200-medley relay to dive into the meet.
- The foursome of junior captain Luke Schwenk (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), sophomores Jair Jackson (Laurel, Md./Chapelgate Christian) and Robert Shively (Potomac, Md./Walt Whitman), and senior captain Sam Shenot (Upper Marlboro, Md./Leonardtown) placed first in the 200-medley relay in 1:39.60.
- First-years Luca Fairbank (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney), Kyle Smith (Crofton, Md./Crofton), and Kai Ng (Silver Spring, Md./Northwood) and sophomore Tony Lumezi (Towson, Md./Towson) tallied a third-place finish in the 200-medley relay in 1:47.97.
- Schwenk led a 1-2 finish in the 200 freestyle, winning the event in 1:45.11 to rank ninth all-time at St. Mary's. Shively followed in second in 1:52.30.
- Sophomore William Kendrick (Laurel, Md./DeMatha Catholic) and Fairbank finished 1-2 in the 100 backstroke as Kendrick won in 59.15. Fairbank came in second in 1:03.27.
- First-year Anthony Davis (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) grabbed a first-place finish in his collegiate debut as Davis touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle in 22.41.
- Schwenk and Davis recorded a 1-2 tandem in the 100 freestyle. Schwenk clocked a winning time of 46.23 to rank second all-time in school history while Davis posted a second-place time of 49.91.
- Ng was the second newcomer to register a win in their collegiate debut as he won the 500 freestyle in 5:13.43 while first-year CB Jurado (Odenton, Md./Arundel) placed third in 5:37.06.
- Jurado earned a second-place finish in the 1000 freestyle in 11:37.86 followed by sophomore Carter Boone (Phoenix, Md./Loyola Blakefield) in third in 11:38.12.
- Smith earned a silver medal in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.43, edging Jackson by 12-hundredths of a second (1:02.55) who finished third.
- Shively led the Seahawks in the 100 butterfly with a second-place finish in 54.07 followed by Shenot in third in 55.08.
