St. Mary’s College Sailing Qualifies for Open ACC Final

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland sailing team served as the host site for the Open Atlantic Coast Championship (ACC) Round 1B this past weekend (Oct. 5-6) while some of the team traveled south to Norfolk, Va., for the Oyster Bowl at Old Dominion University. The Seahawks finished third at the Oyster Bowl while taking sixth at the Open ACC Round 1B.

St. Mary's College tallied 244 points to notch a third-place finish in the nine-team field. The U.S. Naval Academy finished 1-2 with Midshipmen 2 claiming the top honor with 179 points and Midshipmen 1 coming in second with 212 points.
 
In Division A, sophomore skipper Nathan Jensen (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) and senior crew Brooke Bertrand (Costa Mesa, Calif./Corona del Mar) placed third and fourth overall with 96 points. Out of 16 races, Jensen and Bertrand won Races 3A and 16A while taking second in Races 9A and 15A. In all, the duo recorded six Top 5 finishes.
 
Senior skipper Max Kleha (Huntington, Calif./Mater Dei) and junior crew Indiana Theurer (Virginia Beach, Va./Homeschool) came in third in Division B and 10th overall with 148 points. Kleha and Theurer posted a second-place finish in Race 2B while tallying back-to-back fourth-place finishes in Races 10B and 11B.
 
OPEN ACC ROUND 1B
The Seahawks played host to 17 sailing programs from all over the country. SMCM finished sixth with 176 points to earn a spot in the Open ACC Final hosted by Boston College on Oct. 19-20. Tulane University captured the top honor with 132 points, edging second-place Harvard University by two points.
 
In Division B, sophomore skipper Landon Cormie (Vineyard Haven, Mass./Falmouth) and junior captain Emily Shioutakon (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) finished fifth with 84 points, besting Dartmouth University by one point. Out of 13 races, the duo won Race 6B and took second in Race 13B while posting five Top 5 finishes in all.
 
Senior skipper Owen Hennessey (Washington, D.C./Severn) and senior captain Zoe Hoctor (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) went seventh in Division A with 92 points. Hennessey and Hoctor notched seven top-five placements, including winning Race 9A and coming in second in Races 2A and 10A.
