St. Mary's College Women's Basketball Victorious in Season Opener

St. Mary's, MD-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Women's Basketball Team (1-0) kicked off their 2024-25 campaign with a non-conference matchup against Hood College (0-1). The Seahawks defeated the Blazers 77-64 to pick up their first win of the season. 

How It Happened

  • The Seahawks led the Blazers 18-17 after a fast paced opening quarter of play. Marley Saunders hit two three pointers for St. Mary's as they ended the quarter strong, scoring seven of the last nine points to claim a one point advantage. Olivia Liszt and Sam Blaylock cashed in on two long balls as well. 

  • Following the first quarter, St. Mary's used a well balanced offensive attack to swing the momentum fully in their favor. The Seahawks had six different point scorers in the second quarter and closed out the half on a 7-0 run thanks to layups from Tramarie Mobray and Rayna Miller, as well as a three pointer from Sam Blaylock. St. Mary's led Hood 36-25 at the halftime break. 

  • Hood came out fast to begin the new half, trimming the Seahawk lead to just three following an 8-0 run to get things going. St. Mary's was able to regroup, but was unable to fully separate from the Hood as the quarter went on. Tied at 47, Samantha Miller gave the Seahawks a three point advantage following a made triple to close out the third. Keira Mason started to get things going for the Seahawks as well, knocking down a couple of big shots to curb the Blazer momentum. 

  • The fourth quarter began with the Sam Blaylock and Keira Mason show. Mason contributed a quick eight points and Sam Blaylock continued to stay locked in from deep as the Seahawks built back an 11 point lead. The Seahawk defense did not allow the Blazers to seize any huge momentum swings in the waning moments. The Seahawks came out on top, 77-64. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Sam Blaylock paced the Seahawks in points with 17. Blaylock shot an impressive 50% from behind the arc. 

  • Keira Mason went for 14 points and shot 60% from the field. 

  • Tramarie Mobray was one point shy of a double double, picking up nine points and securing 10 boards.
