Seahawks Men’s Swimming Sets Relay Record on First Day of Atlantic East Championships

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team began action at the 2024 Atlantic East Conference Men's Swimming Championship Thursday night (Feb. 15). The Seahawks collected one gold medal and one silver medal on opening day while setting the school, conference, and championship meet record in the 200-medley relay.
 
For the third consecutive year, the Aquatics Center at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center on the St. Mary's City campus is serving as the host site and welcomes Cabrini University, Gallaudet University, Immaculata University, Marymount (Va.) University, and Marywood University to campus.
 
The Seahawks and Marymount, the defending conference champion, ended the night tied for first in the team standings with 74 points each while Marywood rounded out the top-three with 62 points.
 
How It Happened
 
200 Medley Relay
  • SMCM took top honors in the 200-medley relay with a school, conference, and championship meet record of 1:33.87. Swimming on the winning relay were junior captain Luke Schwenk (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), first-year Kyle Smith (Crofton, Md./Crofton), sophomore Robert Shively (Potomac, Md./Walt Whitman), and first-year Anthony Davis (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist).
  • The Seahawks broke the previous school and conference record of 1:35.59 set on December 3 at the Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jacket Invitational. They shaved nearly two seconds off the championship meet record of 1:35.81 set last year by Marymount.
 
800 Freestyle Relay
  • The foursome of Shively and first-years Daniel Madigan (Waldorf, Md./North Point), CB Jurado (Odenton, Md./Arundel), and Kai Ng (Silver Spring, Md./Northwood) came in second in the 800-freestyle relay in 7:27.21.
