ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team have been busy at the 2024 Atlantic East Conference Men's Swimming Championships. The Seahawks collected 20 podium finishes, five championship meet records, five school records, four conference records, four gold medals, three silver medals, and one bronze over the second and third day of competition (Feb. 16-17).
Junior captain
Luke Schwenk (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) had himself a swim in the 50 freestyle, posting the No. 1 time in Division III with a 19.86. Schwenk also nabbed two individual golds plus four championship records, three league records, and three school marks.
For the third consecutive year, the Aquatics Center at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center on the St. Mary's City campus is serving as the host site and welcomes Cabrini University, Gallaudet University, Immaculata University, Marymount (Va.) University, and Marywood University to campus.
The Seahawks are trailing Marymount, the defending conference champion, in the team standings as Marymount is first with 589 points followed by SMCM in second with 479. Cabrini rounds out the top-three with 199 points.
How It Happened
FRIDAY
500 Freestyle
- Sophomore Robert Shively (Potomac, Md./Walt Whitman) garnered the first gold medal of the evening as he touched the wall first in the 500 freestyle in 4:44.81.
- First-years Daniel Madigan (Waldorf, Md./North Point) and CB Jurado (Odenton, Md./Arundel) also stepped on the podium with Madigan finishing fifth in 5:05.71 and Jurado taking sixth with a personal-best of 5:13.47.
200 Individual Medley
- First-year Kyle Smith (Crofton, Md./Crofton) notched a fifth-place finish in the 200 IM with a career-best time of 2:02.42 while first-year Kai Ng (Silver Spring, Md./Northwood) came in seventh in 2:04.34.
50 Freestyle
- Schwenk captured the event with a school, conference, and championship meet record and NCAA B cut of 19.86.
- He originally broke his own 2023 championship meet record of 20.35 during the preliminaries with a 20.26. Schwenk then surpassed his own school and conference record of 20.20 from March 15, 2023, as well as his own championship meet record of 20.26 from earlier that day in the finals.
- First-year Anthony Davis (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) finished tied for fourth in 21.88 while sophomore William Kendrick (Laurel, Md./DeMatha Catholic) tied for seventh in 22.24. Davis and Kendrick both swam lifetime bests in the finals.
200 Freestyle Relay
- The foursome of Kendrick, Davis, Smith, and Schwenk posted a school record of 1:24.65 to place second in the 200-freestyle relay. They shaved off nearly two seconds from the two-month-old mark of 1:26.44 set on December 2.
SATURDAY
400 Individual Medley
- Ng picked up a bronze medal in the 400 IM with a time of 4:22.54.
100 Butterfly
- Shively gained a silver medal in the 100 fly with a time of 51.05 while senior captain Sam Shenot (Upper Marlboro, Md./Leonardtown) just missed a medal with a fourth-place finish in 52.49.
- First-year Thomas Brown (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) collected an eighth-place finish in 58.86.
200 Freestyle
- Schwenk set the school, conference, and championship meet record, not once, but twice in the 200 free. In the preliminaries, he swam a 1:41.47 to break his school and conference mark of 1:41.63 from December 2 as well as the five-year old championship record of 1:44.34 by Cabrini's Cameron Mousley.
- In the finals, Schwenk clocked a 1:39.80 to win the event by five seconds and reset the school, conference, and championship meet records once again.
- Davis also reached the podium in the 200 free with an eighth-place finish in 1:52.79.
100 Breaststroke
- Madigan led the Seahawks in the 100 breaststroke with a second-place finish in 1:00.35.
- Smith placed fifth in 1:01.74 followed by first-year Luca Fairbank (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) in sixth in 1:02.46.
100 Backstroke
- Kendrick claimed a spot on the podium with a seventh-place finish in the 100 back in 57.76.
- Brown won the consolation final for ninth place with a time of 1:01.70.
400 Medley Relay
- The Seahawks added another school, conference and championship meet record to their résumé with their winning time of 3:28.14 behind the efforts of Schwenk, Madigan, Shively, and Davis.
- The quartet broke their own conference and championship meet record of 3:30.55 set at last year's championship meet.
