Schwenk, Brandt Highlight Seahawks Men’s Swimming’s Atlantic East Runner-Up Finish

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Junior Luke Schwenk (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) repeated as the Atlantic East Conference Men's Swimmer of the Year as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team wrapped up action at the 2024 Atlantic East Conference Men's Swimming Championships Sunday evening (Feb. 18).
 
St. Mary's College posted a second-place finish in the six-team field for the second straight season with 701 points, which is the highest point total by the Seahawks since joining the Atlantic East in 2020-21. Eighth-year Head Coach Casey Brandt and his coaching staff picked up AEC Men's Coaching Staff of the Year honors while sophomore Robert Shively (Potomac, Md./Walt Whitman) nabbed the Elite 20 Award.
 
Schwenk collected five gold medals and two silver ones over the course of the four-day competition. The 6-2 captain registered six championship meet records, six conference marks, and six school ones. He also clocked a pair of NCAA B cuts in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. His time in the 50 freestyle – 19.86 – is currently the top time in Division III.
 
How It Happened
  • Schwenk started the fourth day with a gold medal in the 100 freestyle as he captured the event with an NCAA B cut of 44.26, setting a school, conference, and championship meet record as well. He improved upon his own record of 44.44, which he swam at the 2022 championships.
 
  • Shively picked up the victory in the 200 butterfly with a school, conference, and championship meet record of 1:52.26. Shively nicked the previous school, league, and championship meet record by 0.01 seconds, which he set last season.
 
  • First-year Daniel Madigan (Waldorf, Md./North Point) claimed a silver medal in the 200 breaststroke in 2:09.30 while first-year Kyle Smith (Crofton, Md./Crofton) finished fifth in 2:15.01.
 
  • First-year CB Jurado (Odenton, Md./Arundel) notched a second-place finish in the 1650 freestyle in 18:49.21 for his second silver medal of the championships.
 
  • First-year Anthony Davis (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist), Smith, sophomore William Kendrick (Laurel, Md./DeMatha Catholic), and Schwenk came together for a second-place finish in the 400-freestyle relay in 3:10.05.
 
  • First-year Luca Fairbank (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) added a sixth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke in 2:20.29 while junior Sam Meisel (Chevy Chase, Md./Walter Johnson) came in eighth in 2:34.43.
  • First-year Nick Suwito (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) won the consolation final of the 200 breaststroke for ninth with a time of 2:42.60.
 
  • First-year Kai Ng (Silver Spring, Md./Northwood) reached the podium in the 200 backstroke with a fourth-place finish in 2:04.36.
 
  • Senior captain Sam Shenot (Upper Marlboro, Md./Leonardtown) took sixth in the 200 butterfly in 2:02.27 while first-year Jake Williams (Port Republic, Md./Calvert) came in sixth in 2:49.94.
 
  • Kendrick and Davis bolstered the Seahawks' team totals with seventh- and eighth-place finishes in the 100 freestyle. Kendrick (48.92) just out touched Davis (48.93) for seventh.
