St. Mary's College Women's Sailing Wins CNU Fleet Race

The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's sailing team captured the Christopher Newport University Women's Fleet Race Saturday afternoon (Mar. 9) while the No. 12 SMCM open sailing team finished fourth at the St. Mary's College Team Race (Mar. 9-10).

CNU WOMEN'S FLEET RACE
Thanks to wind building throughout the day from five to 25 knots, all 12 races were sailed on Saturday. The Seahawks bested the six-team field with a low score of 89 points.
 
SMCM claimed the top spot in Division A with 41 points, posting a 13-point margin over second-place Christopher Newport. Sophomore Cho-Cho Williams (Norfolk, Va./Granby) skippered the A boat with sophomore Emily Shioutakon (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) and first-year Grace Phillips (Stevensville, Md./Gunston) serving as crew.
 
Williams and Shioutakon won Races 1A, 2A, 6A, and 10A and went on to finish with seven top-3 finishes. Williams and Phillips crossed the finish line first in Race 7A.
 
The Seahawks took second in Division B, tallying 48 points and finishing six points behind CNU. Senior Lily Flack (Stonington, Conn./Marine Science Magnet) and first-year Lina Carper '27 (Carlsbad, Calif./Coronado) were the skippers while first-year Mary Hill (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) and junior Lillian Newman (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) served as the crew.
 
Flack and Hill claimed a pair of top-3 finishes in Races 1B-6B, winning Race 3B and coming in second in Race 1B. Carper and Newman finished the day strong, notching four straight top-3 finishes in the final four races of the day. They won Races 11B and 12B while coming in second in Race 9B and third in Race 10B.
 
ST. MARY'S COLLEGE TEAM RACE
The 12th-ranked Seahawks ended the first day of racing in fifth place amongst the nine-team field with a 6-6 record. SMCM concluded the two-day regatta in fourth with an 11-10 overall mark.
 
St. Mary's College posted a 3-5 log in Round 1 with wins over Hobart & William Smith Colleges (2-3-4), SUNY Maritime College (1-2-4), and No. 11 Tufts University (2-3-4). The Seahawks only lost twice to finish Round 2 with a 6-2 record, including a 1-2-3 finish over Maritime, to advance to the six-team championship field.
 
In the championship round, SMCM logged a 2-3 record with a third win over Tufts (1-4-5) and one over George Washington University (2-3-5). No. 3 Stanford captured the regatta with a dominant 18-3 record while No. 5 Roger Williams University came in second with a 17-4 mark followed by No. 10 U.S. Naval Academy in third with a 15-6 log.
 
Skippering for the Seahawks were senior captain Madison Bashaw (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and juniors Charlie Anderson (Annapolis, Md./Key) and Owen Hennessey (Washington, D.C./Severn). Seniors Rachel O'Neill (Gambrills, Md./South River), Katherine Shermock (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) and Dexter Mueller (Takoma Park, Md./Montgomery Blair), junior captain Zoe Hoctor (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's), and sophomore Raam Fox (Annapolis, Md./Severn) contributed as the crew.
