No. 12 Seahawks Open Sailing Wins Washington College Open Team Race

The No. 12 St. Mary's College of Maryland open sailing team captured the Washington College Open Team Race this past weekend (Mar. 16-17) while taking fifth at the Graham Hall Team Race. The Seahawks women's sailing team came in 13th at the SMCM Women's Fleet Race.
 
WASHINGTON COLLEGE TEAM RACE
The 12th-ranked Seahawks bested the eight-team field with a 9-1 record after winning a sail-off with No. 11 Tufts University to break the tie.
 
St. Mary's College went undefeated in Round 1, notching a 7-0 mark, including a 1-2-3 finish over host Washington College. In the Top 4 round, SMCM logged a 2-1 record as the Seahawks lost to Tufts (3-5-6) force the sail-off.
 
Skippering for the Seahawks were junior Max Kleha (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei), sophomore Jonathan Weed (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), and first-year Nathan Jensen (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) while juniors Brooke Bertrand (Costa Mesa, Calif./Orange Coast College), Henry Haddon (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), and Indiana Theurer (Virginia Beach, Va./Tidewater CC) contributed as the crew.
 
GRAHAM HALL TEAM RACE
No. 12 St. Mary's College finished the Graham Hall Team Race with an 11-4 record to finish fifth in the 16-team field. The Seahawks collected a pair of 1-2-3 finishes over No. 16 College of Charleston and George Washington University.
 
Top-ranked Harvard University captured the Graham Hall Team Race with an impressive 17-1 mark, only losing to No. 4 Brown University in the final four.

Senior captain Madison Bashaw (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and juniors Charlie Anderson (Annapolis, Md./Key) and Owen Hennessey (Washington, D.C./Severn) served as the skippers this weekend while seniors Rachel O'Neill (Gambrills, Md./South River) and Katherine Shermock (Columbia, Md./Long Reach), junior captain Zoe Hoctor (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's), and sophomore Raam Fox (Annapolis, Md./Severn) joined in as the crew.
 
ST. MARY'S WOMEN'S INTERCONFERENCE
The Seahawks placed 13th in the 15-team field with 267 points down on the St. Mary's River.
 
With first-year Lina Carper (Carlsbad, Calif./Coronado) as the skipper and junior Lillian Newman (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) as the crew, SMCM came in fifth in Division A. The duo collected six top-3 finishes, including winning Race 10B.
 
The Division A boat finished 13th with 170 points behind the efforts of sophomore Cho-Cho Williams (Norfolk, Va./Granby), senior Lily Flack (Stonington, Conn./Marine Science Magnet), and sophomore Emily Shioutakon (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel).
 
No. 9 Charleston took top honors with a low score of 132, besting No. 11 Tulane University, who finished second, by 16 points.
