GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior
Luke Schwenk (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) continued to collect hardware at the NCAA Division III Men's Swimming & Diving Championships Friday (Mar. 22) with his top-8 finish in the 100 backstroke.
Schwenk began the day with a record-setting swim in the morning preliminaries of the 100 backstroke, coming in third in his heat and seventh overall in the 35-person field with a time of 48.04. He shaved off 57-hundredths of a second from his own previous school record of 48.61 set on December 9. Schwenk locked up a spot in the evening's championship final with his seventh-place finish in the preliminaries.
He picked up his fourth career All-America award when he placed seventh with another school record, knocking off another six-hundredths of a second for a new mark of 47.98. This is Schwenk's second First Team All-America honor of the week following his fifth-place finish in the 50 freestyle Wednesday night (Mar. 20).
The 6-2 team captain entered the 100-backstroke event tied for the 17th-fastest seed time – an NCAA B cut of 48.61.
He will be back in the pool on Saturday (Mar. 23) for his final event – the 100 freestyle. Schwenk holds the 11th fastest time in Division III with a B standard of 44.26.
