BALTIMORE, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's outdoor track & field team placed 11th in the 17-team field with 27 points at the Johns Hopkins University/Loyola University Maryland Invitational on Saturday (Apr. 20).
St. Mary's College came away with two school records – one broken and one set – while the Seahawks registered eight personal records.
Co-host Johns Hopkins took top honors with 134.5 points followed by Washington & Lee University in second (115 pts) and Division II Frostburg State University in third (67 pts).
How It Happened
- First-year Collin Fitzgerald (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) captured the 200m dash with a time of 22.10 while first-year Mason Layne (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) placed ninth in 22.68.
- Sophomore captain Kelly Byrne (Rockville, Md./Rockville) came in second in the 10,000m run with a school record and personal-best time of 35:45.24, knocking off nearly three minutes off the previous mark of 38:24.63 set by Caleb Shankle '22 on April 15, 2022.
- Sophomore captain Zack Kralec (Monkton, Md./Hereford) took fifth in the pole vault with a height of 4.05m.
- The foursome of sophomore Jaedon Aso (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills), Fitzgerald, Layne, and junior Zane Obi (Germantown, Md./Quince Orchard) finished seventh in the 4x100m relay in 43.93.
- Kralec led a trio of Seahawks in the javelin throw as he went eighth with 43.65m while first-year Jake Robey (Kensington, Md./Georgetown Prep) notched a personal record of 34.07m for a 17th-place finish. Sophomore Ivan Obuekwe (Frederick, Md./Saint Maria Goretti) claimed a 21st-place finish with a personal record of 28.72m.
- First-year Bryson Brown (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) set the school record as well as a personal-best of 11.52m for 13th in the triple jump as Brown becomes the first male Seahawk to compete in the event.
- First-year Aaron Morales (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) notched a 15th-place finish in the 400m hurdles in 1:02.96 while first-year Markell Blake (Philadelphia, Pa./Martin Saints Classical) tallied an 18th-place finish in 1:05.62.
- Morales also picked up a 16th-place finish in the 110m hurdles with a personal record of 18.44.
- Sophomore Doel Nkalo (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill) collected a 16th-place finish in the hammer throw with a personal record of 28.70m while going 19th in the shot put with a throw of 7.58m. Nkalo also added a 23rd-place finish in the discus throw with 24.52m.
- First-year Mason Layne (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) placed 23rd in the 100m dash with a season-best time of 11.39.
- Obi paced SMCM in the 400m dash with a 30th-place finish in 54.50 followed by Aso in 38th place with a personal record of 57.27. Brown notched a personal-best time of 59.33 for 39th place.
- Senior Quentin Pastore (Towson, Md./Towson) ran a 17:52.51 in the 5000m for 32nd place.
- Robey finished 42nd in the 800m in 2:08.63 while junior captain Nate Norris (Owings, Md./Northern) was 46th in 2:09.92. First-year Bryce Webster (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) rounded out the three Seahawk finishers with a 52nd-place finish in 2:25.78.
