4/8/2024 11:43:00 AM

The No. 9 St. Mary's College of Maryland open sailing team picked up a pair of third-place finishes this weekend (Apr. 6-7) at the Prosser Trophy (Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Open Team Race Conference Championship) hosted by Old Dominion University and at the Ocean County College Spring Open.

PROSSER TROPHY
The ninth-ranked Seahawks put forth a strong showing at the MAISA Open Team Race Conference Championship, finishing third in the eight-team field with an 11-3 record.

No. 6 Georgetown University captured the conference title for the second straight season as well as a spot in the 2024 Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Open Team Race Nationals on April 25-27. No. 8 U.S. Naval Academy came in second with a 12-1 record.

In Saturday racing, the Seahawks posted a 5-2 record in Round 1, falling to Georgetown (3-5-6) and Navy (3-5-6). SMCM then recorded a 3-1 mark in Round 2 with its only loss coming at the hands of Navy once again (3-5-6).

The next day, St. Mary's College cruised through the competition, tallying a 3-0 record to finish Round 2 with a 6-1 log. One of those three wins was over Georgetown (2-3-4). Time ran out for a triple round robin so the team standings through the two rounds held.

Skippering for the Seahawks over the weekend were senior captain Madison Bashaw (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and juniors Charlie Anderson (Annapolis, Md./Key) and Owen Hennessey (Washington, D.C./Severn). Seniors Katherine Shermock (Columbia, Md./Long Reach), Dexter Mueller (Takoma Park, Md./Montgomery Blair), and Rachel O'Neill (Gambrills, Md./South River), junior captain Zoe Hoctor (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's HS), and sophomore Raam Fox (Annapolis, Md.) contributed as crew.

OCEAN COUNTY SPRING OPEN
St. Mary's College accumulated 112 points for its third-place finish in the 17-team field. Hampton University took top honors with a low score of 34 while Maritime College came in second with 76 points.

After the first day of racing, the Seahawks sat third in Division A with 26 points and stood third as well in Division B with 17 points for overall second place in the team standings with 43 points.

On Sunday, SMCM wrapped up competition in fourth in Division A as junior skipper Henry Haddon (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and crew Siena Adduci '27 (Sherbon, Mass./Tabor) and Grace Phillips (Stevensville, Md./Gunston) recorded 65 points.
