BOSTON, Mass. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's sailing team placed 10th in the Western Semifinals of the College Sailing Women's Fleet Racing National Championship, just missing the cut for a berth in the championship round and wrapping up their 2023-24 campaign. The Western Semifinals were co-hosted by Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology on May 20-21.
For two days, St. Mary's College battled Tulane University for the ninth spot as the Top 9 finishers from the Western Semifinals qualified for the Women's Fleet Racing National Championship. Tulane edged the Seahawks, 308-332, for the coveted ninth spot as the Green Wave stretched Saturday's eight-point margin to 24 on Sunday.
Senior captain
Madison Bashaw (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) skippered the Division A boat with senior crew
Rachel O'Neill (Gambrills, Md./South River). The duo finished 12th with 168 points as they notched seven top-10 placements over 17 races. SMCM finished fifth in both Race 1A and Race 8A.
Sophomore skipper
Cho-Cho Williams (Norfolk, Va./Granby) and senior crew
Katherine Shermock (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) took on Division B and came in 10th with 164 points. The tandem collected 10 top-10 finishes, including winning Race 11B. They also earned a fourth-place finish in Race 3B and a fifth-place finish in Race 1B.
Bashaw, O'Neill, and Shermock will now set their sights on the College Sailing Open Fleet Racing National Championship, which begins Friday, May 24, with the Western and Eastern Semifinals.
