MANAHAWKIN, N.Y. – A trio of St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey players were recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) with a spot on the
2024 NFHCA Watchlist Thursday afternoon (Aug. 29).
Graduate student
Anna Eaton (Silver Spring, Md./James Hubert Blake), senior
Charlotte Horn (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern) and junior
Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) were part of 181 student-athletes from 75 Division III programs named to the watchlist. Horn and Ziegler are repeat selections to the NFHCA Watchlist after making the cut last season.
This list is intended to highlight those field hockey student-athletes with the strongest potential for consideration to the current year's NFHCA All-Region and All-American teams.
To be nominated for the 2024 NFHCA Watchlist, student-athletes must have been previously recognized for their outstanding field hockey abilities within the past two years (NFHCA All-Region, NFHCA All-American, All-Conference, Senior Nexus Championship selection, NCAA All-Tournament Team, and/or U.S. National or International Team roster) and the student-athlete's head coach must be an active NFHCA member.
This trio helped St. Mary's College exit the Atlantic East Conference with an unblemished 17-0 record in league action, capping it off with the 2023 Atlantic East championship title. The Seahawks collected three Atlantic East regular-season championship crowns in their three years in the Atlantic East. In addition to the program's first-ever conference tournament title, SMCM earned its first-ever trip to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Tournament.
ANNA EATON
Eaton made her first appearance on Second Team All-Atlantic East last season after gaining a spot on the First Team in 2021. The 5-4 midfielder was an integral part of the Seahawks' transition game as she commanded the central portion of the field.
CHARLOTTE HORN
The back-to-back Atlantic East Defensive Player of the Year, Horn collected her third all-region honor last season with a First Team nod after earning Second Team honors in 2021 and 2022. The 5-5 defender is also a three-time First Team All-Atlantic East pick. In 2023, she helped St. Mary's College register eight shutouts and post a 1.42 team goals against average (GAA).
Horn, the 2021 Atlantic East Rookie of the Year, finished tied for the team lead with three defensive saves, tying her for fourth in the conference. She was a dual threat as well, contributing 10 points on offense with two goals and a team second-best six assists.
BRENNA ZIEGLER
The 2023 Atlantic East Player of the Year, Ziegler is a two-time All-Region selection, picking up First Team honors last season and a Second Team nod in 2022. The 5-9 forward is also a two-time First Team All-Atlantic East selection and the 2022 Atlantic East Rookie of the Year. She set the single-season record for points with 41 points on team-bests of 16 goals and nine assists.
Ziegler finished third in the league in goals, assists, and points while recording three multiple-goal games and two multiple-assist contests.
The Seahawks open the 2024 campaign today, Friday, August 30, at the Jamie L. Roberts Stadium against Washington and Lee University at 3 pm before hosting Sewanee: The University of the South on Sunday, September 1, at 11 am.
