St. Mary’s College Sailing Takes Second at Chesapeake Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland sailing teams competed at the Chesapeake Invitational, Chesapeake Open, and Faye Bennet Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Women's Singlehanded Conference Championships this past weekend (Sept. 14-15), which were all hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy.
 
CHESAPEAKE INVITATIONAL
St. Mary's College finished second in the six-team field of the Chesapeake Invitational with 266 points, 17 point behind first-place Georgetown University. The regatta featured three divisions – A, B, and C.
 
Sophomore skipper Landon Cormie (Vineyard Haven, Mass./Falmouth Academy) and junior captain Emily Shioutakon (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) sailed in Division C, tallying 71 points and finishing second among the other Division C boats. Across the three divisions, the duo came in fourth. They collected eight top-five finishes, including winning Races 1C and 4C.
 
In Division B, senior captain Charlie Anderson (Annapolis, Md./Key) and first-year crew Jane Wright (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) came in third within the division with 94 points while taking sixth overall. The tandem won Race 3B and notched four Top 5 placements.
 
Senior skipper Owen Hennessey (Washington, D.C./Severn) and senior captain Zoe Hoctor (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) placed second among the Division A boats and seventh overall with 101 points. Hennessey and Hoctor notched seven Top 5 finishes, including winning Race 12A.
 
CHESAPEAKE OPEN
The Seahawks took fifth (Seahawks 3), sixth (Seahawks 1), and eighth (Seahawks 2) at the nine-team Chesapeake Open.
 
Seahawks 1 had the highest finish in Division A, coming in fifth with 113 points behind the efforts of sophomore skipper Nathan Jensen (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) and senior crew Brooke Bertrand (Costa Mesa, Calif./Orange Coast College). Jensen and Bertrand registered six top-five finishes, including capturing Race 8A.
 
Junior skipper Cho-Cho Williams (Norfolk, Va./Granby) and graduate crew Rachel O'Neill (Gambrills, Md./South River) led Seahawks 2 with a fifth-place finish in Division B with 157 points. The duo tallied five Top 10 finishes, including taking third in Race 11B.
 
Seahawks 3's best finish came in Division A as sophomore skipper Mats Braaten (Toronto, Ontario/Humberside) and sophomore crew Mary Govan (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) took sixth with 141 points behind four top-five finishes, including a second-place finish in Race 5A.
 
FAYE BENNET
Sophomore skipper Lina Carper (Carlsbad, Calif./Coronado) was the lone Seahawk representative at the MAISA Women's Singlehanded Conference Championship. Carper picked up an 11th-place finish in the 17-person field with 139 points.
 
Carper racked up eight top-10 finishes out of 14 races with her highest placements being fourth in Races 7 and 10.
