LATHAM, N.Y. – Seniors
Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) and
Jena Vanskiver (Fallston, Md./Fallston) were picked as the United East Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. The league office made the announcement Monday afternoon (Oct. 13).
This is Ziegler's sixth career (and third in the United East) conference offensive player of the week award while Vanskiver is earning her third career league defensive player of the week honor. Additionally, this is Ziegler's second United East award this season.
The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team posted a 2-0 record this past week with a pair of road wins. St. Mary's College notched a 6-0 victory at Immaculata University (Oct. 8) before beginning conference play with a 4-0 win at Lancaster Bible College (Oct. 11).
Ziegler led the Seahawks with three goals. The 5-9 forward began the week by scoring the game-winning goal at Immaculata to become the program's all-time leader in game-winning goals with 13. She surpassed the previous mark of 12 set by
Amy Skrickus '08 and equaled by
Lauriann Parker '13. Ziegler then scored twice at Lancaster Bible.
Ziegler currently ranks second in the United East with four game-winning goals and 50 shots sitting third with 21 points, nine goals, and 33 shots on goal. She is also tied for eighth with three assists.
Vanskiver began her week with a career-best two goals at Immaculata while helping to limit the Mighty Macs to two shots on goal and no penalty corners for the team's fifth shutout. She then assisted on SMCM's second goal at Lancaster Bible while holding the Chargers to one shot and one penalty corner for the team's third straight shutout.
Vanskiver currently leads the conference with five defensive saves while ranking fifth with 28 shots and tying for sixth with 14 shots on goal.
Regionally-ranked St. Mary's College (8-4, 1-0 UEC) will be back in action this Wednesday, Oct. 15, when the Seahawks welcome Penn State Harrisburg (10-1, 2-0 UEC) to the Jamie L. Roberts Stadium for a conference showdown at 5 pm as SMCM celebrates National Coming Out Day.
