ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swimming kicked off their quest for the program's first-ever Atlantic East Conference championship title with a school record as the championship meet got underway Thursday night (Feb. 13). The 200 medley and 800 freestyle relay champions were decided tonight.
St. Mary's College currently sits second in the team standings with 68 points after finishing second in both relays. Marymount (Va.) University leads the five-team pack with 80 points after capturing both relay events. Rounding out the Top 5 are Marywood University (64), Immaculata University (30), and Gallaudet University (28).
The 200-medley relay came down to the wire as Marymount's
Gavin Deane out-touched sophomore
Anthony Davis (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) by 0.05 seconds to hand the Saints the victory in a conference and championship meet record of 1:33.05.
Senior captain
Luke Schwenk (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), sophomores
Daniel Madigan (Waldorf, Md./North Point) and
Kyle Smith (Crofton, Md./Crofton) swam with Davis and the quartet came away with a school record of 1:33.10, shaving off 0.77 seconds from the old mark (1:33.87) set at last year's conference championship meet.
In the 800-freestyle relay, first-years
Harrison Greenwald (Reisterstown, Md.) and
Stephen Lepine (Rockville, Md.), Madigan, and sophomore
CB Jurado (Odenton, Md./Arundel) clocked a 7:19.09 to claim a silver medal.
