Seahawks Women’s Sailing Captures CNU Women’s Fleet Race

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland sailing team claimed top honors at the Christopher Newport University Women's Fleet Race while coming in seventh at the St. Mary's College Team Race this past weekend (Mar. 8-9).
 
CNU WOMEN'S
The Seahawks bested the host Christopher Newport Captains by eight points to take home the team title, notching a score of 59 points to CNU's score of 67.
 
Sophomore skipper Lina Carper (Carlsbad, Calif./Coronado), along with crew Lillian Newman '25 (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Gina Bonazelli (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair), won Division B by a 12-point margin with a score of 26 over the second-place Captains, who finished with 38 points. Carper and Bonazelli claimed first-place in Races 2B, 3B, and 10B while teaming up with Newman led to wins in Races 6B, 7B, and 8B.
 
In Division A, SMCM finished second with 33 points, four points behind the Captains, thanks to the efforts of junior skipper Cho-Cho Williams (Norfolk, Va./Granby) and senior crew Indiana Theurer (Virginia Beach, Va./Homeschool). The duo notched eight top-3 finishes, including taking top honors in Races 2A, 7A, and 8A.
 
ST. MARY'S COLLEGE TEAM RACE
St. Mary's College notched a 7-12 record and finished tied for sixth with the U.S. Naval Academy, but Navy owned a 2-1 mark against the Seahawks to win the tiebreaker. The Midshipmen took sixth while SMCM placed seventh. Roger Williams University captured the St. Mary's College Team Race with a 16-3 record.
 
Round 1 saw the Seahawks post a 4-3 record followed by a 3-4 mark in Round 2. SMCM finished out the weekend with an 0-5 record in the Championship 6.
 
The skippers for the weekend were seniors Charlie Anderson (West River, Md./Key) and Owen Hennessey (Washington, D.C./Severn), junior Raam Fox (Annapolis, Md./Severn), and sophomore Landon Cormie (Vineyard Haven, Mass./Falmouth).
 
Fox pulled double duty as a crew member as well along with seniors Brooke Bertrand (Costa Mesa, Calif./Corona Del Mar), Henry Haddon (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), and Zoe Hoctor (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's), junior captain Emily Shioutakon (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel), and first-year crew Jane Wright (Wilmington, N.C./Hoggard).
