LATHAM, N.Y. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team landed a program-best five on the 2025 All-United East Conference baseball teams as announced by the conference office
Wednesday morning (May 14) while senior captain
Cole Tarleton (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) was voted the United East Player of the Year.
Tarleton is just the second Seahawk to be named a Player of the Year as
Steve Oursler earned Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors in 1999. Tarleton is also the first player to ever gain four all-conference awards as he picked up Second Team honors in 2022 and 2023 and garnered First Team accolades in 2024 and 2025.
Joining Tarleton with First Team All-United East honors is senior
George Berbakos (Sykesville, Md./Century). Senior
Ryder Chalk (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll) earned a spot on the Second Team while senior captain
Trevor Smith (Montross, Va./Colonial Beach) and sophomore
Rhett Fletcher (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) notched Third Team honors.
Five all-conference selections are the most for St. Mary's College since four picks in 1993, 1998, 2001, and 2021.
Tarleton led the league with a 1.412 OPS (on-base + slugging percentage) while ranking second with team-bests of .444 batting average, .838 slugging percentage, and .574 on-base percentage. The 6-2 outfielder also tied for first with a 1.000 fielding percentage on 59 putouts and two assists in 61 chances while tying for third with five triples, tying for eighth with 43 RBI, and tying for ninth with six home runs.
Among Division III players, Tarleton ranked third in on-base percentage, 11th in slugging percentage, 13th in batting average, and tying for 24th in triples. He also tied for 13th with 0.17 triples per game, 17th with 1.48 RBI per game, and 22nd with 0.97 walks per game.
Twice named the United East Player of the Week this season, Tarleton also gained a spot on the D3baseball.com Team of the Week (April 30). He led the team with 13 multi-hit games and 12 multi-RBI games while stringing together a 19-game hit streak between March 12 and May 2. Tarleton also ended his senior campaign with a reached base streak of 29 straight games.
Tarleton finished his career with a .400 batting average on 162 hits in 405 at-bats, connecting on 38 doubles, 17 home runs, and 12 triples in 114 career games. He also notched 115 RBI, scored 106 runs, and stole 17 bases.
Berbakos collected his first-ever postseason honor. The 6-2 second baseman tied for third in the United East with five triples and 24 fielded double plays. He led the Seahawks with 36 runs scored while sharing the team lead with Tarleton as both connected on 11 doubles each. Berbakos ranked second for SMCM as well with a .364 batting average, 43 hits, and eight stolen bases while sitting third with 25 RBI.
In Division III, Berbakos also tied for 13th with 0.17 triples per game and tied for 24th in triples.
Berbakos wrapped up his career with a .335 batting average on 127 hits in 379 at-bats, cracking 33 doubles, nine triples, and four homers in 101 career games. He scored 91 runs and drove in 85 while stealing 20 bases.
Chalk ended his three-year Seahawk career with his first career postseason award. The 6-0 right-hander came in second in the conference with 69.0 innings pitched while ranking third with six wins. He struck out 42 batters while holding opponents to a .292 batting average and posting a team-best 4.96 earned run average. Chalk went 6-3 in 12 appearances with 11 starts and two complete games while being named the United East Pitcher of the Week on April 7.
Chalk tallied 10 wins in 37 appearances with 23 starts, throwing 141.1 innings and striking out 102 foes during his time as a Seahawk.
Smith notched his first-ever All-United East award after ranking third on the team with a .351 batting average, 34 hits, and 23 runs. The 5-11 third baseman tied for eighth in the league after being hit by pitches 12 times. He sat second on the team with three dingers and fourth with 23 RBI and six doubles. Smith collected 10 multi-hit and seven multi-RBI games.
Smith concluded his three-year Seahawk career with a .331 batting average on 92 hits in 278 at-bats, hitting 27 doubles, seven home runs, and one triple. He tallied 67 RBI and scored 61 runs in 89 games.
In his first year as a starter, Fletcher picked up his first postseason honor. The 6-1 outfielder made no errors in 39 chances to tie for first in the United East with a 1.000 fielding percentage. He finished second on the squad with eight stolen bases, fourth with a .333 batting average, and fifth with 30 hits and two triples. Fletcher also added 16 runs, 14 RBI, and two doubles while ending his sophomore season by reaching base in 18 straight games.
SMCM finished the 2025 season with a 13-16 (11-5 UEC) overall record for the team's fourth consecutive double-digit win campaign. The 11 conference wins are the most since the Seahawks went 10-10 in 2023. St. Mary's College claimed the third seed in the United East Tournament and advanced to the Final Four.
