LATHAM, N.Y. – Senior
Savannah Owens (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) of the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's indoor track & field team claimed the United East Conference Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week award for the second time this season as released by the league office Tuesday morning (Feb. 3). This is Owens' second overall indoor track athlete of the week honor as well.
For the third time this season, the 5-5 sprinter broke the 400m dash school record at the George Mason University Patriot Games. Owens clocked a season-best 1:01.46 to break her previous mark of 1:01.71 from the Finn Pincus Invite (Jan. 17). She went ninth overall in the 400m dash as she claimed the top spot in her heat.
Owens also led off the ninth-place 4x400m relay which clocked a season-best 4:34.93 to lead the conference. She also took 26th in the 60m dash with a personal record of 8.27. (second in UEC, 35th in Mid-Atlantic).
Her performance in the 400m dash leads the United East while ranking ninth in the Mid-Atlantic region. Owen's 60m dash time ranks second in the league and 35th in the region.
St. Mary's College will be back in action this Friday, Feb. 6, at the Scarlet Knights Open hosted by Rutgers University at The Armory in New York City, N.Y. and Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Frank Colden Invitational hosted by Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa.
