The York College women's soccer team snapped their two-match losing
streak with a 3-0 shutout of Capital Athletic Conference
(CAC) rival, St. Mary's College of Maryland, on a beautiful
Saturday afternoon in York.
The Spartans (8-4-1, 4-1 CAC) opened the scoring at 16:26 as
senior Emily Sullivan (Bowie, Md./Archbishop
Spalding) fed freshman Stephanie Mergler (Street,
Md./North Harford) with a pass inside the box. Mergler
drilled the ball top shelf for her second goal of the year.
The remainder of the half would be scoreless as York took the 1-0
lead to the break. York outshot the Seahawks (4-8-1, 2-2-1
CAC) 8-0 in the opening half.
The second half scoring opened when St. Mary's gave the Spartans
an own goal as the York lead grew to 2-0 just over seven minutes
into the half. YCP continued to play well and then added a
third goal at 75:35 when senior Ashley Gross
(York, Pa./Eastern York) tallied her first goal of the year
off a feed from freshman Ali Jones (Riva,
Md./Archbishop Spalding).
The Spartans finished the game with a 16-1 bulge in total shots
including an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. York also held a
4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior Meagan Cahill (Crofton, Md./Arundel)
earned the shutout in goal for the Spartans as she recorded one
save in the win. Junior Marie Oben (Glenn
Dale, Md./St. Mary's-Annapolis), who defeated the Spartans in last
year's CAC semifinal match, suffered the loss as she allowed
three goals while recording three saves.
St. Mary's will be idle for a week until the Seahawks host No.
23 Salisbury University next Saturday, October 13 for Homecoming at
noon at Seahawk Stadium.
