York, Pa. - The York College women's soccer team snapped their two-match losing streak with a 3-0 shutout of Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) rival, St. Mary's College of Maryland, on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in York.

The Spartans (8-4-1, 4-1 CAC) opened the scoring at 16:26 as senior Emily Sullivan (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) fed freshman Stephanie Mergler (Street, Md./North Harford) with a pass inside the box.  Mergler drilled the ball top shelf for her second goal of the year.  The remainder of the half would be scoreless as York took the 1-0 lead to the break.  York outshot the Seahawks (4-8-1, 2-2-1 CAC) 8-0 in the opening half.

The second half scoring opened when St. Mary's gave the Spartans an own goal as the York lead grew to 2-0 just over seven minutes into the half.  YCP continued to play well and then added a third goal at 75:35 when senior Ashley Gross (York, Pa./Eastern York) tallied her first goal of the year off a feed from freshman Ali Jones (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding).

The Spartans finished the game with a 16-1 bulge in total shots including an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal.  York also held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior Meagan Cahill (Crofton, Md./Arundel) earned the shutout in goal for the Spartans as she recorded one save in the win.  Junior Marie Oben (Glenn Dale, Md./St. Mary's-Annapolis), who defeated the Spartans in last year's CAC semifinal match, suffered the loss as she allowed three goals while recording three saves.

St. Mary's will be idle for a week until the Seahawks host No. 23 Salisbury University next Saturday, October 13 for Homecoming at noon at Seahawk Stadium.
