Christmas in September for Swarthmore

St. Mary's City, Md. - Senior forward Michael Bonesteel (Clifton, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) headed the ball to the feet of senior midfielder Pat Christmas (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) who booted it to the left side of the goal, giving the Swarthmore College men's soccer team a 2-1 double overtime victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.

Christmas netted the game-winner for the Garnet (4-0-2) at 106:47, keeping Swarthmore's unbeaten streak alive at six.

After a scoreless first half, the Seahawks notched the game's first goal at 72:34.  Following a St. Mary's corner kick taken by senior midfielder Mikael Tigrett (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown), the ball was bounced around in the box before junior defender Justin Dohn (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) found the back of the net with his first goal of the season.

The Seahawk goal halted senior goalkeeper Ryan Sutcliffe's (Milford, Del. /Milford) consecutive shutout streak at 340:31 minutes.

Swarthmore, who is tied for fourth in the NCAA Middle Atlantic Region, equalized just five minutes later when freshman forward Morgan Langley (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iowan) rocketed a shot from 30 yards out into the top left corner.

The Garnet out-shot St. Mary's 25-9, while the Hawks held a 7-5 advantage on corner kicks.

Senior Tim Carrier (Crownsville, Md. /Old Mill) came up with 12 saves, including a diving stop of a Bonesteel shot at 97:11 to push the game into double overtime.

Zach Weimar (Rutledge, Pa./Friends Central) started in goal for Swarthmore and made four stops in the first half.  Sutcliffe came in at the start of the second half and allowed the lone SMCM goal. 

The Hawks will return to action on Saturday when St. Mary's hosts Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference action at 2:00 following the women's game at noon.  Swarthmore will host No. 10 Johns Hopkins in Centennial Conference play on September 15 at 7:00.
