Seahawks Snap Two Streaks with Victory over Bridgewater (Va.)

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team halted their four-game losing streak and snapped their three-game scoring drought with a 4-1 win over non-conference opponent, Bridgewater (Va.) College, Wednesday afternoon.

Senior captains Alex Pyzik (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) and Mikael Tigrett (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) paced the Seahawk (3-6) offense with two goals apiece.

Bridgewater (1-9) struck first at 8:35 when Shane O'Donnell (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) fired in a shot from 20 yards out that took a weird, high bounce into the goal after senior goalie Rick Besore's (Upper Marlboro, Md./DeMatha Catholic) initial diving save.

However, St. Mary's responded at 20:30 when senior defender Mike Rohrs (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's-Annapolis) headed a pass from the right post to left where Pyzik used a diving header to net his second goal of the year.  Both teams would hold on for the 1-1 halftime draw.

In the second half, two Tigrett goals sandwiched Pyzik's second tally of the game.  Tigrett put back the rebound from freshman midfielder George Gusack's (College Park, Md./DeMatha Catholic) shot at 50:47, giving the Hawks a 2-1 lead.

Pyzik notched his second goal at 53:42 when he took a feed from freshman midfielder Keith Hines (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) and cut back around a defender at the top of the box, rocketing in a left-footed shot for his third goal of 2007.  Tigrett picked up his fourth goal of the season at 63:31 as his free kick from 20 yards out curved into the top far left corner.

Besore finished with three saves in 74 minutes of play, while freshman Paul Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) came in relief for the remainder of the game.  BC's Zane Lineberry (Pulaski, Va./Pulaski County) collected 14 stops while Jack Bottoms (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage) made two saves in 10 minutes of relief action.

St. Mary's out-shot the Eagles 32-7, including the Seahawk defense holding BC to only two shots in the second half.  The Hawks also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Seahawks return to action this Saturday when St. Mary's travels to Owings Mills, Md. to square off against Villa Julie College in Capital Athletic Conference action at 3:00.  Bridgewater will travel to Emory, Va. to face Emory & Henry College at 1:00 on Saturday as well.
