St. Mary's, Mary Washington Notch 3-3 Draw

Box Score

Fredericksburg, Va. - The University of Mary Washington staved off a second half rally by the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team as the Eagles held on for the 3-3 Capital Athletic Conference tie following two, 10-minute overtime periods.

Mary Washington (5-3-3, 3-1-1 CAC) posted a 2-0 lead in the first 45 minutes as sophomore forward Gabi Rangel-LaFuente (Vienna, Va./George C. Marshall) scored on a one-on-one at 20:39 and freshman defender Amy Olson (Crofton, Md./Arundel) scored on an assist from senior midfielder Hannah Pearson (Annandale, Va./W.T. Woodson) at 33:15

This week, the Seahawks (6-0-3, 3-0-1 CAC) received votes in the adidas®/NSCAA Division III National Poll and jumped another three spots this week to No. 4 in the NSCAA Middle Atlantic Region Poll.

Senior defender Abby Bishop (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) cut the Eagle lead to 2-1 at 50:34 as Bishop put in a loose ball following a scramble in front of the goal for her first career tally.  Senior forward Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) knotted the contest at 2-2 less than a minute later.

However, freshman forward Nicole Dierkes (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) helped UMW regain a 3-2 lead at 52:32 with her third goal of the season.

The game's second equalizer came off a free kick taken by junior midfielder Sophia Esparza (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair), capping a 2:56 span of scoring frenzy.

St. Mary's fired off two shots in each overtime period but senior Laura McCarthy (Glen Rock, N.J./Immaculata Heart Academy) stood steadfast in cage, saving all four shots.  The Eagles only managed one shot between both OT stanzas.  The Seahawks finished the match with a 21-5 shot advantage, including 10-1 in the second period, as well as a 6-1 corner kick margin.

Sophomore Elizabeth Benge (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) improved to 2-0-1 in 2008 with a pair of saves.

McCarthy finished the contest with nine stops, including two from point blank range in succession in the second extra period.

The Seahawks will now be idle until Saturday, October 11 when St. Mary's welcomes Stevenson University to Seahawk Stadium for another conference tilt at noon.
