Fredericksburg, Va. - The University of Mary
Washington staved off a second half rally by the St. Mary's College
of Maryland women's soccer team as the Eagles held on for the 3-3
Capital Athletic Conference tie following two, 10-minute overtime
periods.
Mary Washington (5-3-3, 3-1-1 CAC) posted a 2-0 lead in the
first 45 minutes as sophomore forward Gabi
Rangel-LaFuente (Vienna, Va./George C. Marshall) scored on
a one-on-one at 20:39 and freshman defender Amy
Olson (Crofton, Md./Arundel) scored on an assist from
senior midfielder Hannah Pearson (Annandale,
Va./W.T. Woodson) at 33:15
This week, the Seahawks (6-0-3, 3-0-1 CAC) received votes in the
adidas®/NSCAA Division III National Poll and jumped another
three spots this week to No. 4 in the NSCAA Middle Atlantic Region
Poll.
Senior defender Abby Bishop (Ijamsville,
Md./Urbana) cut the Eagle lead to 2-1 at 50:34 as
Bishop put in a loose ball following a scramble in
front of the goal for her first career tally. Senior forward
Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) knotted
the contest at 2-2 less than a minute later.
However, freshman forward Nicole Dierkes
(Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) helped UMW regain a 3-2 lead at 52:32
with her third goal of the season.
The game's second equalizer came off a free kick taken by junior
midfielder Sophia Esparza (Silver Spring,
Md./Montgomery Blair), capping a 2:56 span of scoring frenzy.
St. Mary's fired off two shots in each overtime period but
senior Laura McCarthy (Glen Rock, N.J./Immaculata
Heart Academy) stood steadfast in cage, saving all four
shots. The Eagles only managed one shot between both OT
stanzas. The Seahawks finished the match with a 21-5 shot
advantage, including 10-1 in the second period, as well as a 6-1
corner kick margin.
Sophomore Elizabeth Benge (Bethesda, Md./Walter
Johnson) improved to 2-0-1 in 2008 with a pair of saves.
McCarthy finished the contest with nine stops,
including two from point blank range in succession in the second
extra period.
The Seahawks will now be idle until Saturday, October 11 when
St. Mary's welcomes Stevenson University to Seahawk Stadium for
another conference tilt at noon.
