Salisbury, Md. - Sophomore
forward Mike Napolitano (Ellicott City, Md./Mt.
Hebron) shined for the Salisbury University men's soccer team
Saturday afternoon as Napolitano's five points
(1g, 3a) helped the Sea Gulls to a 5-2 victory over St. Mary's
College of Maryland in Capital Athletic Conference action.
Salisbury (10-3-1, 3-2 CAC) took a quick 2-0 lead as the Sea
Gulls put two up in the first two minutes of the game.
Napolitano scored just 33 seconds in as he slipped
in behind the SMCM defense and finished off a feed from sophomore
midfielder Ben DeLisle (Baltimore, Md./Loch
Raven), beating the sophomore keeper Paul
Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills). Then, at
2:01, Napolitano sent in a cross from the left
side and junior midfielder Alex Hargrove (Clarks
Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) one-timed the shot in for SU's second
goal.
The Sea Gulls went up 3-0 at 12:32 as
Napolitano sent in a through ball behind the
defense and this time, DeLisle one-timed it.
Senior forward Cyrus Albertson (Chevy Chase,
Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) got the Seahawks (3-6-4, 2-2-2 CAC)
on the scoreboard as Albertson put in a loose ball
at 13:27.
Napolitano's shot rebounded off
Spranklin and junior midfielder Kenneth
Price (Elkton, Md./Rising Sun) then notched SU's fourth
goal at 34:15 as Price put back the rebound which
hit off the left post and went in.
Junior forward Misha Simon (Silver Spring,
Md./Good Counsel) cut the Salisbury lead to 4-2 at 43:57 as
Simon beat junior Joshua Scotton
(Delmar, Md./Delmar) with a shot to the bottom left corner.
Salisbury's final goal came just 1:56 after the start of the
second half as freshman midfielder Sam Flax
(Baltimore, Md./Pikesville) took a feed from senior midfielder
Romaine Bruney (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining).
The Sea Gulls outshot St. Mary's, 15-9, as the shots were even
at six apiece in the second half, while Salisbury posted a 7-4
margin on corner kicks.
Spranklin finished the match with four saves,
while Scotton gave up two goals in the first 45
minutes and junior Greg Wellinghoff (Salisbury,
Md./James M. Bennett) made one save with no goals against during
the second half.
St. Mary's will be back in action this coming Monday, October 13
when the Seahawks travel to Washington, D.C. to face Gallaudet
University in an another conference tilt at 7:00.
