St. Mary's City, Md. - The 24th-ranked Seahawks
of St. Mary's College of Maryland rebounded nicely from Wednesday's
first loss of the season with a 2-0 shutout of York (Pa.) College
Saturday afternoon. Senior midfielder Taylor
Cervenka (Damascus, Md./Damascus) netted the game-winner,
while junior forward Kaitlin Boswell (Baltimore,
Md./Friends) added the insurance marker.
The Seahawks (8-1-3, 5-0-1 CAC) remain atop of the Capital
Athletic Conference standings with today's win, while York (9-5-1,
4-2 CAC), who came in as the No. 2 team, drops to fourth after
today's loss.
After collecting a through ball from freshman midfielder
Bridget McGovern (Wrentham, Mass./King Philip
Regional), Cervenka took a few dribbles before
shooting the ball underneath sophomore Desiree
Halaka (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) who got a hand on
it before the ball hit the netting for a 1-0 Seahawk lead at 18:46.
Boswell's goal in the 75th minute resulted from
pure determination as she continually dribbled up from about 30
yards out, split two defenders and then chipped the ball over
Halaka's head for her second tally of the year.
York held the edge in shots (16 to 10) and corner kicks (7 to 3)
but the Spartans were unable to put anything past the Seahawk
defense and senior keeper Marie Oben (Glenn Dale,
Md./St. Mary's, Annapolis), who finished the afternoon with nine
saves.
Halaka registered three stops in the loss.
St. Mary's returns to action next Tuesday, October 21 when the
Seahawks travel to Arlington, Va. to take on Marymount (Va.)
University in another CAC tilt at 8:00. The game will be
played at Wakefield High School.
