St. Mary's City, Md. - The Christopher Newport
University men's soccer team gave up a 3-0 lead in the final 15:59
of the game and had to hold off St. Mary's College of Maryland's
late rally to eke out a 3-2 non-conference win Wednesday afternoon.
Freshman forward Chris Quamina (Glen Burnie,
Md./Mount Saint Joseph) netted back-to-back goals to put the
Seahawks (5-7-4) within one with 35 seconds left in regulation.
St. Mary's head coach Herb Gainey expressed,
"I'm extremely proud of the boys for battling back from being down
three and showing tremendous heart."
CNU got off to a quick start as senior midfielder Kyle
Allan (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) blasted a shot into the near
top left corner at 2:26 after receiving a short pass from senior
midfielder Brian Tweed (Springfield, Va./West
Springfield) and quickly turning and releasing the shot. St.
Mary's held off the Captains for the remainder of the first half
and the Seahawks were only down 1-0 at halftime.
Christopher Newport (13-3-2) went up 2-0 in the second half at
52:58 when senior midfielder Jimmy Hash
(Montclair, Va./Forest Park) converted on a low-angle shot which
bounced around the near left post before trickling in.
Senior forward Jimmy Majewski (Prince George,
Va./Prince George) gave the Captains a three-goal cushion at 60:59
as Majewski one-timed a short drop pass from
senior forward Kenny Huttman (Reston,
Va./Herndon).
Undaunted, the Seahawks continued to fight and it paid off in
the 75th minute when Quamina touched in a
misplaced clear attempt behind a sliding junior Matt
Tengs (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), cutting the
deficit to 3-1.
Quamina struck again but this time he finished
off a through ball sent up by junior forward Misha
Simon (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel).
CNU outshot the Seahawks, 22-6, and registered a 6-2 advantage
in corner kicks. The Captains came into today's match-up
receiving votes in the NSCAA Division III Top 25 Poll and being
ranked fourth in the South Region.
Freshman Dan Gressang (Bowie, Md./Bishop
McNamara) registered five saves, while Tengs made
no stops but his defensive line notched a team save.
St. Mary's returns to action this Saturday, October 25 when the
Seahawks welcome No. 2 York (Pa.) College to Seahawk Stadium for a
Capital Athletic Conference match-up at 2:00 on Senior Day.
