Salisbury, Md. - Junior
midfielder Christina Eury (Germantown,
Md./Damascus) netted the game-winner in overtime to help the
Salisbury University women's soccer team clinch the No. 1 seed in
the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament
as the Sea Gulls went up against St. Mary's College of Maryland in
the battle of conference unbeatens Saturday afternoon.
This afternoon's match-up featured the top two teams in the
conference as St. Mary's (9-2-3, 6-1-1 CAC) and Salisbury (8-4-4,
6-0-2) both came into the game tied for first place. The loss
solidifies St. Mary's hold as the No. 2 seed in the CAC Tournament,
which begins November 1. Both squads will receive first-round
byes as the top two seeds and host semifinals on November 4.
Eury scored her second goal of the season just
32 seconds into the first overtime period as she received a pass
from senior forward Dana Passucci (Denville,
N.J./Morris Knolls) on the right side of the goal and buried it
into the back of the net.
The first half went scoreless despite the fact that the Sea
Gulls outshot St. Mary's, 7-0. However, senior keeper
Marie Oben (Glenn Dale, Md./St. Mary's, Annapolis)
and Seahawk defense kept Salisbury at bay as Oben
collected a pair of saves.
In the second half, St. Mary's generated a bit of offense with
four shots, but two were off the mark and two were denied by senior
goalie Gena Goodson (Lexington Park, Md./Great
Mills).
The Sea Gulls finished with a 15-4 shot advantage as well as a
4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Oben ended the afternoon with five stops, while
Goodson stayed with her two second-half saves.
