Hampden-Sydney, Va. - Four
Seahawks connected on a double to help the St. Mary's College of
Maryland post a 10-6 come-from-behind win at Hampden-Sydney College
Sunday afternoon in SMCM's first game of the 2008 campaign.
Hampden-Sydney (1-4) struck first in the third inning when
senior designated hitter David Toney
(Mechanicsville, Va./Lee Davis) hit a two-run single.
The Seahawks (1-0) pulled within 2-1 in the fourth as freshman
DH Brad Shepherd (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills)
doubled to bring home senior catcher Mike
Broccolino (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) who had a lead-off
double to start the inning.
The Tigers took a four-run lead in the fifth as Toney picked up
his third RBI of the game with his second hit, while freshman
catcher Zach Harrelson (Danville, Va./George
Washington) doubled to score Toney. Harrelson then crossed
home plate when sophomore outfielder Ryan Daniel
(Yanceyville, N.C./Bartlett-Yancey) singled and then advanced to
second on the throw.
St. Mary's notched its first lead of the contest with five runs
in seventh as the Seahawks capitalized on two HSC errors.
Freshman infielder Matt Streich (East Greenwich,
R.I./East Greenwich) cracked a two-run double as well to score
senior infielder Jay Benedetti (Laurel,
Md./Hammond) and junior catcher J.P. Debrowski
(Sykesville, Md./Glenelg).
HSC knotted the game at 6-6 in the eighth as senior infielder
Daniel Prieto (Wellington, Fla./Cardinal Newman)
singled to drive in Daniel with no outs.
Junior infielder Jay Turen (Clarksville,
Md./River Hill) hit a two-run double and Benedetti had a two-run
single with two outs in the ninth to seal the Seahawk victory.
Sophomore Jon Gill (Owings Mills, Md./Park)
pitched a solid four innings for St. Mary's to earn the win on the
mound, including retiring the first two batters and allowing just
one hit in the bottom of the ninth. Gill (1-0) walked two and
struck out one, while giving up just three hits and one earned
run. Benedetti paced the Seahawks at the plate with a 3-of-6
effort which included two RBI, one run scored and a double.
For the Tigers, senior Brock Ward (Lanexa,
Va./New Kent) suffered the loss as Ward (0-1) yielded four runs
(two unearned) on one hit and four walks in 1.2 innings of work.
St. Mary's will return to action on Saturday-Sunday, February
16-17 when the Seahawks travel to Ashland, Va. for a three-game
series at Randolph-Macon College. SMCM will have a
doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11:00 a.m. and then have one
game the next day at 1:00.
