Seahawks Rebound with 7-1 Win

Box Score

Ashland, Va. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team put up 13 hits en route to a 7-1 triumph over Randolph-Macon College Sunday afternoon in the final match-up of a three-game series.  The Seahawks posted a 1-2 work for the weekend at R-MC.

Senior outfielder Josh Feldman (Cabin John, Md./Walt Whitman) scored SMCM's first run in the second inning on freshman infielder Jeff Malcom's (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) ground out to the pitcher.

The Seahawks boasted a four-run cushion after the fifth inning as St. Mary's notched three runs.  SMCM capitalized on two Yellow Jacket errors as well as a pair of wild pitches by R-MC's pitching staff.

Randolph-Macon (2-4) cut the lead to 4-1 in the eighth as junior infielder Jeff Beck (Richmond, Va.) connected on an RBI single to score junior infielder Greg Meleski (Weston, Fla.) who earned a walk.

St. Mary's tacked on three more runs in the ninth behind a sac fly by sophomore outfielder Jacen Killebrew (La Plata, Md./La Plata) and two RBI singles from senior infielder Jay Benedetti (Laurel, Md./Hammond) and freshman designated hitter Brad Shepherd (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills).

Killebrew, Benedetti, and Shepherd each finished the game with two hits and an RBI apiece, while Benedetti scored twice and Killebrew stole two bases.

Senior right-hander Brian Briggs (Laurel, Md./Hammond) pitched five strong innings for the Seahawks as Briggs (1-0) scattered only a pair of hits and struck out two as well as walked three.

Beck was the only Yellow Jacket to have a multiple-hit game as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Junior Charlie Hartt (Richmond, Va.) took the loss for R-MC, giving up four runs (only one earned) on six hits.  Hartt (0-2) struck out four and walked two.

St. Mary's (2-2) will look to keep the winning going this Wednesday when the Seahawks travel to Washington, D.C. to take on former Capital Athletic Conference opponent, Catholic University, in non-conference action at 3:00.
