Seahawks Lose Tough CAC Contest on the Road

Box Score

Dover, Del. - The Wesley College baseball team picked up a 9-8 Capital Athletic Conference victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Thursday afternoon on a walk-off walk in the bottom of the ninth inning.

A bases loaded walk to pinch hitter Anthony Cisternino in the ninth brought home pinch runner Kevin EllisEllis had been picked off at first base earlier in the inning, but in the ensuing rundown, the Seahawks (10-11, 3-3 CAC) missed the tag.  St. Mary's then intentionally walked the next two Wolverine batters to set up a forced out situation at any base.  The move backfired, however, when senior closer Caleb Simms' (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) 3-2 pitch missed the strike zone to bring home the winning run.  Simms (0-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing a run on three hits and a walk.

Colin Warner (3-0) earned the win on the mound in relief for Wesley as Warner scattered two hits and gave up two earned runs with two walks in one inning of work.

St. Mary's tied the game in the top of the ninth with three runs.  A single by senior DH Mike Broccolino (Millersville, Md./Old Mill), a walk to freshman outfielder Matt Streich (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich), and a Wesley error loaded the bases before junior infielder Jason Turen (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) got hit by a pitch to bring home the first run to make it 8-6 in favor of Wesley.  A walk to freshman outfielder Bobby Corton (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) and an RBI single by senior infielder Mike Lance (Eldersburg, Md./Centennial) scored two more runs to tie the game at 8-8 before Warner worked out of the jam with a line drive double play.

The Seahawks got a pair of two-out hits in the first to take a 1-0 lead when Streich connected on an RBI single to drive in Broccolino, then two Wesley errors in the third allowed another run to score.

The Wolverines (18-4, 5-2 CAC) tied the score in the fourth when a two-out error by SMCM allowed two runs to score.  Another Wesley error in the fifth plated another St. Mary's run for a 3-2 advantage.

A five-run fifth broke the game open for Wesley.  Dan Bunnion doubled in a run to tie the game and a bases loaded walk to Matt Pizzolato gave the Wolverines a 4-3 lead.  Billy Cunningham followed with a two-run base hit to left center to make it 6-3 and the final run scored when James Overstreet grounded into a fielder's choice.

St. Mary's immediately cut it to 7-5 with a pair in the sixth with a bases loaded hit by pitch to Broccolino and a walk to StreichScott Marshall singled in a run in the eighth to make it 8-5.

Marshall and Pizzolato each connected twice for the Wolverines as Pizzolato had two walks, one RBI, one double and one run.

Streich finished 2-for-3 at the plate for SMCM with two walks, two RBIs, two runs and two doubles, while sophomore outfielder Jacen Killebrew (La Plata, Md./La Plata) and Broccolino also had two hits each.
