Seahawks, Wesley Split CAC Twinbill

St. Mary's City, Md. - St. Mary's College of Maryland and Wesley College each notched a win as the two teams wrapped their three-game series Saturday afternoon with a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader.  Wesley (19-5, 6-3 CAC) edged the Seahawks 2-1 in the three-game set as the Wolverines posted a 9-8 triumph in the single-game outing on Thursday.

The Seahawks (11-12, 4-4 CAC) used a six-run second inning to claim an 8-2 victory in the first half of the twinbill.

Two Wesley errors, an RBI single to left center by junior infielder Jason Turen (Clarksville, Md./River Hill), a two-run triple to center field by freshman outfielder Bobby Corton (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) tripled to center field, an RBI double by senior infielder Jay Benedetti (Laurel, Md./Hammond), and an RBI single to center field by senior DH Mike Broccolino (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) helped St. Mary's plate six runs in the second.

The Wolverines picked up runs in the third and seventh to make the final, 8-2.  SMCM had eight runs on eight hits and made only one error in the game.

Broccolino, Corton, and Turen all had two hits for the Seahawks.  Broccolino connected on his second home run of the season in the fourth, while Turen scored twice.

Junior Stu Madden (Langhorne, Pa.) and freshman Kevin Murphy (Middletown, Md./Middletown) each notched a pair of hits for Wesley.  Murphy picked up his sixth double of 2008 as well as his first career triple.

Senior right-hander Brian Briggs (Laurel, Md./Hammond) improved to 2-2 on the year with five strikeouts, two walks, and two earned runs on six hits in 6.2 innings pitched.

Senior John Passwaters (Bridgeville, Del.) dropped to 2-2 for the season, giving up four earned runs on eight hits with no strikeouts.

Game Two: Wesley 7, SMC 5

Wesley staked a 7-5 win in the nightcap as a result of two runs in the top of the ninth and a solid inning of relief pitching by sophomore closer Colin Warner (Dagsboro, Del.) who picked up his third save of the year.

With the contest knotted at 5-5 through eight innings, senior Dan Bunnion (Blackwood, N.J.) registered a one-out RBI single to give the Wolverines a one-run lead.  Then Bunnion scored on a single to right field by sophomore Grant Morlock (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) after Bunnion advanced to second on a balk by sophomore righty Jon Gill (Owings Mills, Md./Park).  Bunnion finished the game 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs, while Morlock went 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run.

After Warner gave up a leadoff triple to Turen, he was able to get Corton to hit into a double play as Turen was tagged out at home.  Warner then struck out the next Seahawk batter for the game's final out.

Broccolino, freshman infielder Matt Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown), and sophomore outfielder Jacen Killebrew (La Plata, Md./La Plata) had two hits apiece for SMCM.  Gill (2-2) suffered the loss after allowing the game-winning runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings of relief with two strikeouts.
