Fredericksburg, Va. - The
University of Mary Washington baseball team scored three runs in
the bottom of the eighth inning to post a come-from-behind 3-2
victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Sunday afternoon in a
rescheduled Capital Athletic conference contest from March 7.
With the win, the Eagles (17-6, 10-2 CAC) staked a 2-1 edge in the
three-game series.
The Seahawks (13-14, 6-6 CAC) claimed a 1-0 lead in the third
inning when Mary Washington's junior right-hander Andrew
Cox (Orlando, Fla./Trinity) walked in a run.
Freshman outfielder Bobby Corton (Owings Mills,
Md./Calvert Hall) reached on an error by the first baseman before
advancing to second on freshman infielder Matt
Baden's (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) single to left
field. Corton then went to third on sophomore outfielder
Jacen Killebrew's (La Plata, Md./La Plata)
fielder's choice to second base. Killebrew stole second and
senior infielder Jay Benedetti (Laurel,
Md./Hammond) walked to load the bases. Cox pitched his second
straight base on balls to junior catcher J.P.
Debrowski (Sykesville, Md./Glenelg).
St. Mary's went up 2-0 in the fifth as Killebrew plated the run
on an error by the Eagle second baseman with two outs.
Killebrew had singled to left field and stole second.
After leading off the eighth with a lead-off ground out to
third, Mary Washington received back-to-back singles from senior
outfielder Riley Gorman (Machipango, Va.) and
freshman infielder Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va.)
to set up runners on first and third. Gorman cut the lead to
2-1 as he came home on a wild pitch by senior righty Ryan
D'Antuono (Ellicott City, Md./Howard), while Rehbein
advanced to second. D'Antuono got senior catcher Alex
Rossi (Arlington, Va.) to ground out to third base for the
inning's second out before sophomore infielder Will
Wright (St. Louis, Mo.) connected on an RBI triple down
the right field line to knot the game at 2-2 as Rehbein came
home. Wright notched the go-ahead run on sophomore DH
Frankie Sheffield's (Chester, Va.) single to right
field. The inning ended when Sheffield was caught stealing at
second.
The Seahawks left two on base with one hit and one walk in the
ninth as Cox struck out the lead-off batter, got a fly out to
center by third batter and fifth batter hit into a fielder's choice
to shortstop to preserve the 3-2 Eagle win.
Rehbein finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and a
stolen base, while Cox improved to 4-1 on the season as he allowed
nine hits, threw five walks and struck out four.
Junior infielder Blake Beaudoin (Damascus,
Md./Damascus) paced SMCM with a 3-for-5 effort with a double, while
Killebrew picked up two more stolen bases for a team-leading
16. D'Antuono (4-2) was saddled with only his second loss of
the season despite striking out seven Eagles and only walking one.
The Seahawks will travel to Salisbury, Md. to take on Salisbury
University at 2:30 on April 2 in a CAC tilt.
