St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College
of Maryland baseball team split a Capital Athletic Conference
doubleheader with the University of Mary Washington on
Sunday. The Seahawks (6-6, 3-2 CAC) claimed a 7-2 victory in
the first game, while Mary Washington (8-3, 4-1 CAC) notched an
11-6 win in the nightcap.
St. Mary's will fly down to Florida on Monday and will kick off
its Spring Break trip on Tuesday, March 11 with non-conference
action against SUNY Oneonta at 9:00 a.m.

The Seahawks trailed 2-1 after three innings of play but
after a three-up, three-down fourth inning for Mary Washington, St.
Mary's broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning that was
sparked by junior infielder Jason Turen's
(Clarksville, Md./River Hill) first career home run.
Turen started the inning with a lead-off homer to left field to
equalize at 2-2. The next two runs were results of RBI
singles to centerfield by senior Mike Broccolino
(Millersville, Md./Old Mill) and junior J.P.
Debrowski (Sykesville, Md./Glenelg). The final two
runs came about St. Mary's capitalizing on an Eagle error by senior
outfielder Jon Sims (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills).
Outfielders Jacen Killebrew (La Plata, Md./La
Plata) and Bobby Corton (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert
Hall) were perfect at the plate for SMCM as Killebrew was 2-of-2
and Corton went 3-for-3 with a double. Turen finished with
two hits and three runs.
Senior righty Ryan D'Antuono (Ellicott City,
Md./Howard) recorded the win to improve to 2-1 on the season as
D'Antuono struck out four and scattered five hits in 5.1 innings.
Suffering the loss for the Eagles was junior Wes
Hayden (Arlington, Vt./Burr and Burton Academy) who
dropped to 2-2 on the year despite striking out eight. Hayden
gave up four earned runs on 11 hits.
Game Two: Mary

Mary Washington rebounded quickly in the nightcap as the
Eagles posted seven runs in the first inning. Senior
Chase Townsend (Chesapeake, Va./Greenbriar
Christian) connected on a two-run triple to put the Eagles up 2-0
with one out. Back-to-back walks with bases loaded gave UMW a
4-0 advantage. Two more runs came from a two-run single by
sophomore infielder Seamus Bergen (Fredericksburg,
Va./Chancellor). Sophomore Frankie Sheffield
(Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) scored the final run on an error by
freshman Brad Shepherd (Columbia, Md./Oakland
Mills).
Bergen, Townsend, and freshman Eric Rehbein
(Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) each had three hits for Mary Washington,
while Bergen notched four RBI and Townsend had three.
The Eagles scored 13 runs on 18 hits, while St. Mary's was
scoreless for seven innings before notching three in the
eighth. The Seahawks were fired up by an RBI single by
sophomore Donald Redmiles (Davidsonville,
Md./DeMatha) and a two-run double by freshman infielder
Jeff Malcom (Salisbury, Md./Parkside).
Junior Andrew Cox (Orlando, Fla./Trinity)
improved to 2-0 on the year as he struck out two and gave up just
one hit in 7.0 innings.
Six different Seahawks collected hits in the loss.
Senior Brian Briggs (Laurel, Md./Hammond)
suffered the loss as Briggs gave up five earned runs on three hits
in 0.1 innings.
