After 13 Innings, Seahawks and Catholic End in 3-3 Draw

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. - St. Mary's College of Maryland and Catholic University played to a 3-3 draw in 13 innings in non-conference baseball action Thursday afternoon.

The last six innings of the game were a pitching duel between freshman righty Greg Weidner (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) and Catholic's pitching staff as the Cardinals went to the bullpen five times.  Weidner pitched 7.0 solid innings of relief, giving up just one hit while striking out three and walking only one.  He retired 18 straight batters from the last out in the seventh inning to the second out in the 13th inning before yielding his first and only hit.

The Seahawks (14-17-1) posted a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a two-out, two-run single by freshman Matt Streich (E. Greenwich, R.I./E. Greenwich).  Freshmen Bobby Corton (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) and Matt Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) crossed home plate for SMCM.  Corton had singled to right field, stole second and advanced to third on Baden's infield single.  Baden went to second on a walk to senior captain Jay Benedetti (Laurel, Md./Hammond).

Catholic (13-11-1) captured the lead in the top of the seventh inning as a line drive by senior Mike Goodman (Brookville, Md./Sherwood) that was knocked down by the back of senior right-hander Ryan D'Antuono's (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) leg sparked the Cardinals.  Junior Joe Devine (Medford Lakes, N.J.) tripled to right center with no outs to score Goodman and senior Robbie O'Brien (Columbia, Md./Long Reach).  Goodman had stolen second, while O'Brien walked.  A single to left field by senior Matt Rosner (Cherry Hill, N.J.) drove in Devine.

With the Cardinals up 3-2 and no outs on the board, Weidner relieved D'Antuono and got the first batter he faced to hit into a double play.  He walked the subsequent batter and then got a pop up to second base to end the inning.

D'Antuono left the game with 6.0 strong innings under his belt, striking out eight and walking two with three runs on four hits.  Baden was the only Seahawk to notch multiple hits with two.

St. Mary's knotted the contest at 3-3 in bottom of the seventh when junior Jason Turen (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) connected on a leadoff single, advanced to second on a sacrifice hit by junior Blake Beaudoin (Damascus, Md./Damascus), went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly to center by sophomore Jacen Killebrew (La Plata, Md./La Plata).

Five different Cardinals each notched a hit, while freshman right-hander Drew Hoffmaster (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) started on the mound for CUA, throwing 6.1 innings with three strikeouts, one walk and three runs on five hits.

The Seahawks return to action this Saturday when St. Mary's travels to Washington, D.C. to face Gallaudet University in their final two games of the conference three-game series at noon.
